New Greenville transitional housing offers beds for men in need

View Comments
New transitional housing in Greenville can serve more than 40 men recovering from addiction or leaving homeless shelters.
The eight new homes are located behind the Miracle Hill Overcomers Center, an addiction recovery center,  on North Pleasantburg Drive. Each home has room for six men who have graduated from a recovery program.
Such transitional housing serves as a puzzle piece in the overall solution to providing affordable housing, according to Ryan Duerk, president and CEO of Miracle Hill Ministries, the homeless service provider in the Upstate that built the homes.
I m asked every week of my life if we need more shelters in the Upstate, and the answer is no, Duerk said. We don t need more shelters; we need more shelter exits.

Supreme Court: Say no to discrimination in adoption – The Forward

Nine years ago, just before my eighth birthday, I was placed in foster care. My birth mother was extremely ill; I did not expect to go home to her, and had no idea if I would ever see her again. There was a shortage of foster families in my rural county, and none who wanted a boy my age. After six months of living in a residential facility, I was placed with a loving family who adopted me, and they are the most important thing in my life.

What I didn’t know at the time was that when I met them, my adopted parents had already spent a year and a half trying to open their home to a child in foster care without success.

Cold weather shelters in Spartanburg remain busy during COVID-19

Spartanburg experienced its first freezing weather of the season last week and that left many without a home looking for a place to stay.
Miracle Hill Ministries shelter at 189 N. Forest St., has been helping those in need of a warm place to stay for years. The shelter pulls out beds and uses several areas to accommodate people, but its mission has become more challenging because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The shelter was able to house up to 80 people, but social distancing requirements means the shelter can t accommodate the same amount of people.
We have been practicing social distancing so to do it correctly we have enough space for 44 people, said Calvin Vinson, Miracle Hill Ministries facility director. We are doing the best we can, but sometimes it s difficult to maintain social distancing. We are not going to let anybody freeze and are doing what we can.
