After five years on the streets, dog returns home to Millbury

MILLBURY — This dog sure made tracks.
Nearly five years ago, "Bay," an 18-month-old Basenji rescue dog, escaped from Renee Perry’s brother’s home in Framingham and disappeared.
Perry and her friends searched for the peripatetic pooch, described as shy and timid, with no luck.
“There was never any sign of her,” said Perry, a Framingham Public Schools teacher who lives in Millbury. “She never popped up anywhere. We looked all summer. I always looked. Whenever I drove in Framingham, I always looked.”
Now, a little older and with perhaps a little wiser, Bay is back home after years of wandering and freeloading. Bay's life on the run was undone in Needham when she yielded to the temptation of a free meal.

April 9 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts woman whose dog went missing five years ago was reunited with her pet, who was found wandering about 10 miles from home.
Renee Perry of Framingham said Bay, a basenji mix, went missing from her home in June 2016, when she was only 1 1/2 years old and was being watched by a sitter.

Perry said there was no sign of her missing pet until she received a message last week saying Bay had been captured by Missing Dogs Massachusetts and Needham Animal Control.
Missing Dogs Massachusetts volunteers said a Needham woman reported a dog that she had previously spotted in 2019 had returned to the area and was visiting her yard at least once a day.

Bay escaped an initial attempt to trap her and continued to visit the yard, as well as the nearby Wellesley town dump.
Last year, someone saw a photo of Bay on a Needham community page but thought it was another dog that Missing Dogs of Massachusetts had been looking for. Matthew contacted that Needham resident, and it turned out Bay was not the dog in question, but the pair stayed in touch.
More recently, Matthew and another volunteer decided to catch the prowling pooch. Last week, they set up the trap, and early Tuesday morning, they caught the wandering woofer when she went in to snag a meal.

A lost dog that had to survive on its own for nearly five years in Massachusetts has been reunited with its owner.The Basenji mix named "Bay" went missing in Framingham in June 2016, according to her foster owner, Renee Perry. The dog was just a puppy at the time and was being watched by a sitter.Last week, Perry says she received a message that didn't quite register with her at first. "I got a text that said: 'You're not going to believe this, they found her.' And I said: 'Found who?'" Perry said. "I was shocked."There were reports of a dog wandering in Needham in 2019, but the woman who reported it thought it was just a neighborhood dog. But two years later, the same woman noticed the same dog had come back."She posted last week that the dog was coming to her yard regularly, every day, either nighttime or morning," said Danielle Matthew, a volunteer with the group Missing Dogs Massachusetts.Missing Dogs Massachusetts and Needham Animal Control set up a kennel trap in that woman's backyard and were able to safely capture the dog after a few days.The volunteer group discovered the dog had a microchip and discovered it was Bay. The group was able track down the rescue she was from and ultimately contact Perry."We had no expectation of that. We were just blown away," said Deb Newport, also of Missing Dogs Massachusetts."We weren't sure if, once we trapped her, that if she would have a license and it would come back that she lived a few streets away and was just allowed to roam," Matthew said. "It wasn't until we saw her in the kennel and saw that she was in rough shape, but we had no idea it was this."Bay has been examined by a veterinarian and was deemed healthy. She is doing well and comfortably resting by Perry's side."There's no words to say: 'Thank you.' I mean, five years is a long time," Perry said.Matthew and Newport say Bay was likely able to survive on her own for those five years by eating scraps at the Wellesley recycle and disposal facility.

A Massachusetts woman just couldn’t catch the stray dog she was feeding.
That’s when Missing Dogs Massachusetts volunteers stepped in to help her out. That’s also when they discovered the dog wasn’t a stray — it was Bay, a basenji who went missing five years ago.
“She is now safe and warm after almost 5 years out there. A microchip helping make the final identification,” a Facebook page on the group states. “As you can see, she has not been lacking for meals.”

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts (WBZ) -- A Framingham dog was reunited with her owner after being missing for five years. Bay, a basenji, went missing while staying with a dog sitter because her owner was away, the non-profit Missing Dogs Massachusetts wrote on Facebook.
Bay was reported missing to the organization in 2016 and there were sporadic sightings of her.
In 2019, there were reports of a wandering dog in Needham. “Many had been feeding the dog as well. It was thought that it was a dog that had an owner and was allowed to roam. Then the dog would go off the grid as they often do.”
