Apple
stock received a thumbs up Friday from Loop Capital analyst Ananda Baruah, who repeated his Buy rating on the tech giant and boosted his target price to $155 from $131. The call comes ahead of the company’s upcoming December quarter earnings report, due after the close on Jan. 27.
Baruah writes in a research note that he expects a “really big year” for Apple (ticker: AAPL), and the signs should be clear with the upcoming earnings report. He thinks there could be material upside to Street numbers for both the near term and throughout calendar 2021, driven by strength in both iPhones and Macs. Baruah also thinks the company could see upside from healthy growth in iPad, AirPod, Watch, and Services.

Apple to Open Developer Academy, Provide Funding for Minority Entrepreneurs

Updated Jan. 13, 2021 4:08 pm ET
Apple Inc. is launching several projects to extend education and funding opportunities to minority entrepreneurs, part of the $100 million pledge it made in June to help combat racism in response to the national outcry over the killing of George Floyd.
The iPhone maker on Wednesday said it would open a software-developer academy in Detroit later this year and launch two venture-funding initiatives for young “Black and Brown entrepreneurs,” with the goal of helping to build the next generation of diverse leaders.
“We are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said. “And these new projects send a clear signal of Apple’s enduring commitment.”

Qualcomm Bolsters 5G Ambitions With Planned $1.4 Billion Acquisition

Mobile-phone chip giant
Qualcomm Inc.
QCOM 2.09%
said Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire a chip startup founded by former
Apple Inc.
engineers, adding to a wave of deals remaking the semiconductor industry.
Qualcomm said it plans to buy Nuvia Inc. and use the two-year-old company’s technology in its flagship smartphones, driver-assistance systems, laptops and networking infrastructure. The proposed all-cash transaction is valued at about $1.4 billion, Qualcomm said, before working capital and other adjustments.
Nuvia’s expertise in designing central processing units, Qualcomm said, would help it boost chip performance and power efficiency—characteristics that are vital to success in the hot 5G-networking market that Qualcomm has made a priority.

SEOUL—Huawei Technologies Co.’s sanctions-induced smartphone slump has rivals seeing opportunity in a market where switching brands is rare.
With U.S. restrictions curbing its access to key parts, Huawei has suffered a plunge in sales in recent months, most strongly benefiting South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. and other Chinese makers.
