When the announcement came that Yosemite National Park would reinstate its day-use reservation system, restricting the number of visitors for most of the month of February, Douglas Shaw hit a breaking point.
Shaw is the co-owner of Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort, a long-standing and beloved resort set on a forested hillside just 23 miles from the park’s Arch Rock entrance. The 50-acre complex has for decades been a mainstay for international backpackers, young couples and families seeking affordable and comfortable accommodations near the park. ....

Yosemite National Park will require visitors to purchase day-use reservations to enter the park starting on Feb. 8, according to a press from park spokeswoman Jamie Richards. Annual pass holders will also need day-use reservations, which are valid for seven days and must be validated on the first day of the reservation.
The park is currently closed due to damage from a severe winter storm, and officials announced today that the reopening would be pushed back to Monday, Feb. 1.
“Park staff continue to clear roads and trails, mitigate hazard trees, and work toward restoring safe conditions for employees and visitors due to last week s Mono wind event,” Richards wrote in a news release. ....

Mariposa County, most famously a gateway into Yosemite National Park, is on the verge of being declared a disaster area after a powerful windstorm left behind a path of destruction with homes split in two by fallen trees and roads covered in fallen power lines and debris.
The county board of supervisors voted in favor of a proclamation Friday, 5-0, declaring a local emergency and requesting state and federal funds to assist with the recovery effort. Now it s in California Gov. Newsom s hands to ratify the declaration. ....
