An impending change in the way emergency service providers handle drugs is expected to strain an already struggling volunteer system and in one case was the catalyst that forced a Pittsylvania County agency to abandon its rescue operations.

Rescue squads around the region are suffering from lack of volunteer support, and now, faced with funding reductions, some are considering possible closure.

Come June 30, the Mount Cross Volunteer Fire and Rescue agency will no longer be a first responder for emergency medial services.

The issue was catapulted into the spotlight by plans for a community development in the Axton area.
