Rajni Bector was a BA second-year student at Miranda House in New Delhi when she got married in 1957 into a prominent Ludhiana business family. She was yet to turn 18. Like her mother-in-law, what she was expected to do was to join the ranks of a well-rounded support system. To keep herself busy, she started taking cookery classes, an activity she excelled in and enjoyed. Her mother-in-law could not wrap her head around why a ‘rich Ludhiana wife’ would want to work, so the young daughter-in-law did not touch a rupee of what she earned; all went to charity. Appreciation of her culinary and management skills inspired confidence, and her husband in particular saw business potential in her ‘part-time indulgence’. She had found her role. Today, she is a role model.

MUMBAI: Regulators are keeping a close eye on the deluge of shadow bank lending to individuals looking to take advantage of the boom market in initial public offers (IPOs), mindful of potential systemic risks, said people with the knowledge of the matter. RBI’s draft paper on the proposed regulatory framework for nonbanking finance companies (NBFCs) released last Friday suggested a funding cap of Rs 1 crore per individual for a shadow bank. Banks can lend Rs 10 lakh per person for IPO financing.

As the Indian stock markets continue to rally, investors have found a new favourite: global fast-food chains.
Take for instance US-based Burger King. After the stellar debut on the bourse in December 2020, the company’s stock has gone up by more than 141% from its offer price of Rs 60.
Similarly, Mrs Bector, a premium biscuit and bakery items manufacturer which supplies buns to outlets of KFC, Burger King, Carl’s Jr and Westlife Development (which holds the franchise rights for McDonald’s in western and southern India), also received strong traction from investors. Its initial public offering was subscribed 198 times, and the stock now trades at around 48% premium to the IPO price of Rs 288.
