A North Carolina teen was left struggling to walk after developing a rare health condition seen in young people that scientists have linked to COVID-19.
More than 2,000 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) have been reported in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
MIS-C is a condition in which different parts of the body can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

The causes of MIS-C remain a mystery, but the vast majority of young people who have suffered the condition have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been in contact with someone with the disease.

'You just got to know your child': Harnett County mother warns parents of COVID-19 related illness

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- What initially started as a lingering headache quickly turned into a life-threatening situation for Theodosia Sharp's daughter, Kimariya.
During the first two weeks of February, 10-year-old Kimariya was being treated by a full medical staff at Duke Hospital.
"It was rough, especially when you hear that a ventilator is going down your child's throat, that's the scariest part of it all," Sharp said.
This situation was a far cry from what the young girl initially dealt with in mid-January. According to Sharp, she first noticed her daughter acting odd when she kept complaining about a headache.

A pediatric cardiologist is offering a children’s COVID-19 clinic in Laredo to treat rare cases of young kids who suffer serious symptoms weeks after a bout with the virus.
The clinic, located in Dr. Claire Cigarroa’s office, opens Wednesday and focuses on Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), which as of now is rare.
But Cigarroa wants to spread an education campaign so pediatricians and parents know about the syndrome, which causes certain organs of the body — such as the heart — to become inflamed. It can lead to death, but a child is more likely to heal when MIS-C is caught early and treated with medication, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

BEAUMONT, Calif. (KCAL/KCBS) – Eight-year-old Anthony Rodriguez Jr. recently got a warm welcome home after fighting for his life in the ICU.
He had been in Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital fighting against a rare illness associated with COVID-19 called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C.
His father Anthony Rodriguez said the entire family had COVID-19 in early December, but that they had mild symptoms and recovered.
But about five weeks later, his son suddenly came down with a fever.

THE SYNDROME IS RARE BUT MEDICAL EXPERTS SAY IT APPEARS AFTER A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED OR EXPOSED TO COVID. DOCTORS DID AN ANTIBODY COVID TEST FOR ALLIE THAT CAME BACK POSITIVE. As COVID-19 Rises Among Adults, Inflammatory Syndrome Rises Among Children, Rady Doctor Says

"Gratefully, this inflammatory syndrome is rare in and of itself," Tremoulet added. "There have been children that have, unfortunately, died of this illness but that is uncommon as well."
MIS-C is a syndrome that typically presents itself in children two to six weeks after they have had close exposure to COVID-19, typically through family members who have been infected with the disease.
"There are some children, and we don’t know why yet, that end up developing this inflammatory syndrome a few weeks after the family or someone close by has been infected with COVID," Tremoulet said.
One of those children was 18-month-old Roman Sorcia.

SALT LAKE CITY — The number of patients at Primary Children's Hospital diagnosed with a coronavirus-related complication has doubled from the past two months.
In fact, there are now over 1,500 confirmed cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, otherwise known as MIS-C. The syndrome develops after the child has been infected by SARS-CoV-2.
As medical experts try to unravel the long-term effects of COVID-19, Primary Children's Hospital officials announced Tuesday that they will begin the first-term study of MIS-C.
