The institute was born in the midst of a controversy around the anola gay exhibit which was supposed to be held at the air and space museum, but it got canceled. This was an attempt by the smithsonian to do an honest and balanced exhibit about the decision to drop the bomb and the consequences of the atomic bombings. This was in 1995 which was the 50th anniversary. In the midst of that, i was decided with one of my students whose grandmother survived the bombing at hiroshima, she and i decided we would do Something Special to commemorate the 50th anniversary. We have two courses on campus and bringing students to hiroshima. While we were planning this, the smithsonian exhibit got canceled.
