Microsoft has committed to storing and processing all of its European Union (EU) customer data within the bloc by creating an “EU Data Boundary”,  but data protection experts have criticised the move as a tacit admission that data is being routinely processed elsewhere.
In a blog post announcing the plan, Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith said the EU Data Boundary pledge would apply to data processed by its main cloud services – including Azure, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 – and the engineering work needed to deliver the project would be completed by the end of 2022. ....

Police Digital Service (PDS), the new identity for the Police ICT Company. This represents far more than a name change; the organisation will have a broader remit and the resources to drive significant changes in policing.
History
The Police ICT Company was established in 2015 with the aim of supporting law enforcement agencies in England and Wales to make the best use of technology to deliver efficient and effective policing. It was intended to create a bridge between the policing, technological and commercial worlds, as well as helping cut the cost of police ICT, reduce duplication, and improve collaboration. ....

Sweden’s data protection authority IMY has fined the Swedish Police Authority €250,000 for unlawfully using controversial facial-recognition technology company Clearview AI to identify individuals in breach of the country’s Criminal Data Act.
Following reports in local media, an investigation by the IMY found that between the autumn of 2019 and 3 March 2020, Clearview AI’s app had been used by Swedish police on a number of occasions, and that several employees had used the facial-recognition tool without prior authorisation. ....

Police ICT Company sets out priorities


The Police ICT Company is making plans for a change of name and to step up its activities.
Ian Bell, chief executive officer of PICTCO, and Wayne Parkes, chair of the Police Technology Programme and director of the National Enabling Programme, outlined the plans at the Police Digital Summit yesterday.
They related it to the aims of the National Policing Digital Strategy, published in January of last year, pointing to the digital ambitions for the sector over the next five to 10 years.
A plan to change the name of PICTCO – which provides technical advice and delivers services to UK police forces – to the Police Digital Service is still being formalised, but Bell and Parkes set out a number of its priorities. ....
