Ohio-class submarines represent one leg of America’s nuclear triad of atomic weapons. Serving as the backbone of U.S. national security, this triad consists of land, sea, and air-based capabilities. According to this strategy, these assets provide around-the-clock deterrence to prevent catastrophic actions from adversaries across the globe.
In order to fulfill its role as an attack sub, the Los Angeles class is outfitted with 25 torpedoes launched from four tubes. These horizontal tubes can also launch both Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles (TLAMs) and Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
The programme will deliver increased out-of-water maintenance capability at HM Naval Base Clyde, home of the UK's nuclear deterrent.
