India-China ties set for 'hard times' over next 5-10 years, ex-NSA Shivshankar Menon says

New Delhi: The India-China relationship will be marked by “hard times” over the next five to 10 years, former national security advisor (NSA) Shivshankar Menon said Tuesday as he discussed his new book during an online event hosted by Harvard Kennedy School.
India now faces a China that is “in a hurry” to seize a moment of opportunity outlined in its global ambitions, Menon said during the event. “Xi Jinping sees China as central to Asia.”
However, he said India-China tensions won’t be permanent. “The fact is China is part of our neighborhood and on our periphery… it is never going to be a purely competitive adversarial relationship and it also never was a purely cooperative one. It swings between these two,” he explained. ....

Washington: Amid spiraling tension between India and the US over the passage of America’s warship through Indian waters, Washington sought to sink differences with New Delhi, saying it values its partnership with India.
The passage of the US warship for a naval operation, through India s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the Lakshadweep coast, without prior consent last week has triggered discord between the two countries with New Delhi immediately registering its opposition through diplomatic channels. ....

USS John Paul Jones,conducted a ‘Freedom of Navigation Operation’ 130 nautical miles west of the Lakshadweep Islands inside India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Shashi Tharoor said India must go for a more pragmatic approach than outrage.

The US Navy s Seventh Fleet did nothing illegal by holding operations in India s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) a few days ago, but it could have avoided publicly thumbing its nose at India, former Union Minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said. The US can be accused of not respecting our sensibilities but not of breaking international law, he said.
In a series of tweets today, Mr Tharoor said there was nothing in the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, the Law of the Sea) that backs India s stand on freedom of navigation through the EEZ. ....

US announces Freedom of Navigation Operation in Indian waters

New Delhi– The US has announced that it conducted the Freedom of Navigation Operation (FONOP) in Indian waters in the Lakshadweep Islands, leaving the Indian security establishment in a surprise leading to an assessment to ascertain if an operational exercise was actually carried out or was it just an innocent passage.
The US Navy announced that it carried a Freedom of Navigation Operation inside India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) without prior consent.
Reacting to it, a senior government official stated that if it was an innocent passage it’s not an issue.
“We don’t object to normal transiting but if there has been an operational exercise without informing then it needs to be taken up,” the official said. ....
