The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the European Union to support the initiative of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who proposed a European certificate of vaccination against covid-19, to travel freely in Europe.
“IATA urged all branches of the European Union to support an initiative by the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to agree on a common European digital covid-19 vaccination certificate, which would allow vaccinees to travel freely across Europe without the test to covid-19”, reads in a statement released by the association representing around 290 airlines.

Councils start limiting access to beaches and public spaces
A number of Algarve councils have started restricting access to beaches
A number of Algarve councils have started restricting access to beaches. Portimão council today conditioned access to various areas along the coast and public spaces in the municipality to prevent crowds gathering, in light of the worsening covid-19 pandemic. Access to the recreational marina, to the most popular beaches, riverside areas and benches in public spaces and gardens is prohibited. Faro council also close access to its beach to "reduce the likelihood of contagion". Vila Real de Santo António has also closed off a number of wooden walkways that give access to its beaches.

Polls open in Portugal

Polls open in Portugal
The polling stations for the presidential elections opened today at 8am.
According to the spokesman for the National Elections Commission (CNE), João Tiago Machado, polling stations opened across the country without major problems and without any reported cases of boycotts.
The main complaints were related to “complaints from people in queues, waiting for the counting of early votes”, and the situation is now normalised.
The waiting time in these cases varied depending on the amount of early votes received in each parish, explained João Tiago Machado, specifying that there were places that had “zero early votes” to count, but there were others that had many, such as Cascais, that will have had more than five thousand votes.

The PS parliamentary leader has stated that the Portuguese economy was above what was predicted during the global crisis of 2020, highlighting employment and investment.
Speaking in the debate on general policy with the prime minister, in Parliament, Ana Catarina Mendes made a speech in which she called for “responsibility from all political actors” in response to the current health crisis and sought to convey a message of confidence in the future, presenting a series of economic indicators on Portugal’s development over the last six months.
“The available data shows that the Portuguese economy beat all forecasts in the third quarter of last year and continued to perform above forecasts in the fourth quarter,” she said.

As Portugal prepares to go to the polls on 24 January to vote in the Presidential elections, new measures to help the most vulnerable to cast their vote have been put in place.
At the Centro Popular de Lagoa nursing home, smiles were seen through the windows of those who were exercising their right of vote. This new initiative to promote early voting in nursing homes is a new way of voting without leaving home for residents in nursing homes or for those who are infected and, as a consequence, can’t leave their houses.

Portfacts - Love, Paint and Imagination

Portfacts - Love, Paint and Imagination
My quest to find out how somebody’s trash is another person’s treasure.
A few months ago I went to visit our resident ‘Birdman’ Alan Vittery and did a little story on him (if you are curious you can still find it online), but while I was at his house I kept seeing these piles of, well… rubbish everywhere. There were old bits of driftwood, wires, computer circuit boards and broken fans scattered all around the place.
But upon closer inspection I saw that all this clutter was actually coming together (quite literally) to become the most beautiful works of art. Old water taps, strings and screws, door knobs and pieces of cork were all transforming into crazy intricate faces and seaside places - with beautiful sunset paintings providing the perfect backdrop for bits of an old chair that had now become delightful wooden ‘shanty towns’.

Air traffic in Portugal last year fell to levels last recorded in 1998, with a total of 345,300 flights, 58 percent less, after the maximum of 816,000 flights recorded in 2019.
“NAV Portugal managed 345,300 flights in 2020, a year negatively marked by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic that were felt particularly strongly in civil aviation”, revealed the airspace manager, according to the provisional data of 2020. Also indicating that these numbers represent “the worst record since 1998”, when 357,000 flights were managed.
Comparing to the last year, the value recorded in 2020 represents a 58 percent drop in air traffic, in line with that observed throughout the network of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), whose traffic fell 55 percent over the past year.
