New Zealand Breakers to set up NBL home in Tasmania

New Zealand Breakers to set up NBL home in Tasmania
The New Zealand Breakers are set to play home games out of Launceston later this season as their nomadic NBL existence continues.
The Breakers have been in Australia since late last year. They were first based in Melbourne before a move to Hobart, and then returned to Melbourne for the ongoing NBL Cup.

NBL Cup round table the big talking points

Our Roundtable is back to answer some of those burning questions.
Currently at 6-0 going into the hub, is Melbourne United far and away the best team in the NBL?
Olgun Uluc: They really are. At a risk of sounding like a broken record, United just has so many top-tier pieces to be a contender, but then boast near-perfect role players to make them the title favourite.
When healthy, United just has too many weapons, and the chemistry seems to be at a point where everyone knows his role going into each game. But then, even in their game against the Hawks - where they were missing Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, and Jo Lual Acuil Jr. - they could then lean on the likes of Mitch McCarron and Jock Landale to be their superstars. Those two players have taken a step back, relative to their ceiling, for the betterment of the team; as much as the talent makes them the favourites to win it all, that type of selflessness is what clearly separates them from the pack.

NBL Ryan Broekhoff joins South East Melbourne Phoenix

South East Melbourne Phoenix have ramped up their pursuit of a maiden NBL title with the signing of Boomers star Ryan Broekhoff for the remainder of the season.
Broekhoff will suit up for the Phoenix towards the end of the NBL Cup, it is hoped, with the 30-year-old sharpshooter currently in Michigan with his family. They will need to clear quarantine once they return to Australia.
Broekhoff has spent the past couple of seasons in the NBA at Dallas Mavericks, before he was then signed and waived by the Philadelphia 76ers, paving the way for his return home.

Casper Ware steers Sydney Kings past New Zealand Breakers in NBL

A fourth-quarter explosion from Casper Ware has helped the Sydney Kings celebrate their return home with a 84-74 NBL victory over the New Zealand Breakers.
With the Kings forced to spend their first six games in Queensland due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ware looked rusty on his home court when he missed seven of his opening eight shots on Friday night.
Breakers star Corey Webster, who had a game-high 25 points, looked set to spoil the Kings' welcome-home party by steering his team to a five-point lead midway through the final quarter.
But Ware showed why he's still considered one of the league's showstoppers, reeling off eight points and assisting on another key bucket to power the Kings down the stretch.

United earn bragging rights in NBL derby

United earn bragging rights in NBL derby
Melbourne United remain on top of the NBL ladder after withstanding a late challenge to defeat local rivals South East Melbourne Phoenix 96-90.
The derby clash at Bendigo Basketball Stadium gave Victorians their first taste of NBL action this season with United reaffirming their status as title contenders with their third win of the campaign.
Rookie Jack White led the way with 22 points, six rebounds and four blocks as Melbourne joined the Hawks as the only unbeaten teams remaining after three rounds.
"The rap on (White) at different times was his shot hasn't been consistent but we've seen him shoot it so consistently in practice,'' coach Dean Vickerman said after the 23-year-old drilled two triples to get United rolling early.

Bullets get off the mark with win over Kings

Bullets get off the mark with win over Kings
The Brisbane Bullets have claimed their maiden win of the 2021 NBL season by downing an injury-hit Sydney Kings 90-87 on Tuesday.
After back-to-back home losses to the Hawks, Brisbane (1-2 record) finally gave their fans something to cheer about at Nissan Arena by breaking their drought in the third-round clash.
The Bullets were staring down the barrel heading into the match, slumping to a 0-2 season start for the first time since 2003.
Brisbane coach Andrej Lemanis was facing the sobering prospect of stumbling to a 0-3 record for the first time since his rookie year at the New Zealand Breakers helm in 2006.

Safety concerns over NBL court stickers

Safety concerns over NBL court stickers
The NBL has been urged to take action after slippery on-court stickers at Adelaide's home court were again slammed as an accident waiting to happen.
The Australian Basketball Players' Association (ABPA) has demanded the NBL address the issue after players continually slipped on the sponsor decals in Friday's clash between the Adelaide 36ers and New Zealand Breakers.

The gripping finale concluded when Breakers import Lamar Patterson, whose three-pointer with 17.8 seconds remaining gave his side a sniff, missed his next attempt on the buzzer that would have forced double-overtime.
For the Breakers, Tai Webster (34 points) sizzled in his first NBL game in almost eight years before fouling out with 11.8 seconds left, Tony Crocker's ensuing free throws giving the Sixers the cushion they needed.
