It is feared that the amendment could have a chilling effect on free speech giving more power to the police and restricting freedom of the press.
The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell on Thursday detained a youth from Vadodara for allegedly posting obscene tweets about the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Twitter back in July after the commission took cognizance of one female stand-up comedian getting rape threats on Twitter and asked Vadodara police to arrest the offender.

A reply affidavit submitted by Principal Secretary, Health, Jayanti Ravi, on Wednesday before the High Court on measures taken to check the surge in cases in the state after the festive season, stated that Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who also holds the health portfolio, had visited Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on November 16 with senior bureaucrats and had held a review meeting.

Body swap in hospital: Gujarat HC says can't direct to file FIR, hospital says kin also responsible

They had also sought that that the court may deem the police authorities’ non-registration of an FIR till date and not investigating the case “as an act of criminal negligence and an act to help the accused.”
The court of Justice AS Supehia however rejected the plea on the ground that the aggrieved party hadn’t approached the magistrate first as is expected and before exhausting available remedies, they had approached the high court.
Referring to a Supreme Court judgment, the court also observed that “if the high courts entertain such writ petitions seeking registration of FIR, then they will be flooded with such writ petitions and will not be able to do any other work.”

GCCI webinar Newer investments show demand is sustainable, says Sitharaman

Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman. (PTI)
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday, said that newer investments by private players were an indicator that the demand seen post Covid-19 lockdown is sustainable. The minister was attending a virtual interaction with office bearers of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI)
Stating that the government is “increasingly feeling the revival of the Indian economy is not just happening due to the pent up demand which remained during the lockdown,” Sitharaman said, “The sustainability of the revival is something which I believe, is seen because many private investors, big corporate leaders —- particularly those who relate to core sectors —- are showing interest in newer investments. When newer investment are being planned by big industry, it is a very encouraging sign, because when new investments happen from the private sector, it means it comes because they are confident that there is demand picking up…I take it as an indicator that demand is genuinely sustainable.”
