The 28-year-old's comments revived speculation on whether the banned trio of himself, David Warner and Steve Smith were unfairly treated as scapegoats for the "sandpapergate" scandal.
On Tuesday evening, the quartet of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood released a joint statement on the matter, denying any knowledge of ball tampering and taking aim at "past players" saying "we must have known" about it, demanding an end to the "rumour-mongering".

Australia's Test bowlers conveniently overlooked the fact that they'd been implicated by a teammate when complaining about fresh scrutiny over the ball-tampering scandal.
So says former Australian captain Michael Clarke, an obvious target of a pointed statement from Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.
"We pride ourselves on our honesty. So it's been disappointing to see that our integrity has been questioned by some journalists and past players in recent days in regard to the Cape Town Test of 2018," the statement said.
Clarke said that it was "impossible" that only Cameron Bancroft, David Warner and Steve Smith had any idea what was going on as 'Sandpapergate' unfolded. He said that the bowlers had to have known the ball was being altered, making the comment after Bancroft told The Guardian: "Yeah, obviously what I did benefits bowlers and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory."

The four bowlers in the middle of the reignited sandpaper conspiracy have defended themselves against suggestions by Cameron Bancroft, who was suspended for ball tampering at the time, that they were aware of the subterfuge.
Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood released a joint statement at 5pm on Tuesday addressed to the Australian public.
"We pride ourselves on our honesty," it reads. "So it's been disappointing to see that our integrity has been questioned by some journalists and past players in recent days in regard to the Cape Town Test of 2018.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon have released a joint statement after the 2018 ball tampering scandal came back in the spotlight this week.
The bowling quartet responded to Cam Bancroft’s latest interview where he suggested that the bowlers were aware he had sandpaper in his pocket and was using it on the ball.
“Yeah, obviously what I did benefits bowlers and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory … had I had better awareness I would have made a much better decision.,” he told The Guardian.
