South carolina s governor is warning residents not to take any chances. this is a unpredictable storm, a hurricane, and so we must be vigilant. we are in a very deadly game of chess with hurricane florence, and what we re doing, team south carolina is doing, is staying one step ahead, and that s what we have done with the precision of these instructions. joining me now by phone is myrtle beach mayor brenda bethune. mayor bethune. thank you for joining us. you obviously have issued a state of emergency for your city two days ago. how are evacuations going? the evacuation plan is slow at this point, and we expect that to continue due to the volume of people that are trying to evacuate and the fact that we are not connected to a major interstate, so we really are trying to get people evacuated and safe on roads that were not ....
Will be watching this hour to hour as we are going through the next 72 hours. and the carolinas, and marianna atencio, where are you, and is there an evacuation order where you are? ali, this is wrightsville beach, and there is a voluntary evacuation where we are right now, and i want you to take a look at behind me on the beach here. they have actually started to move the cranes to remove the lifeguard stands from the beach, because this area tomorrow morning will be a mandatory evacuation order. if indeed, as michelle was explaining that european model turns out to be the path of the storm, this area which is about 10 miles outside of wilmington, it will get a direct hit. it will be in the direct path of the storm, and so this is where you will see the storm surge and those wind gusts, and again, this a area here, wrightsville beach stands to see some the worst weather in the next 72 hours. and wrightsville beach is ....
what s the situation with gas and water? we do still have gasoline. some stations have run out, but i just rode through town, and i saw people lined up. i have not heard that we are out of water anywhere, and we have had multiple companies contact us saying that they would donate water when and if needed. so today i think is a great day to really finalize all of your plans and preparations. get your important documents together. get your food. contact your emergency contacts. let people know where you re going to be. that is so important during a storm like this because communication lines may be down, so if you are evacuating, please let someone know where you will be. and mayor, what are you able to do for people who are lacking the resources to either get out or don t have somewhere to go? we have multiple shelters set ....
Category and the speed of the wind. that is important in terms of its destructive abilities, but that storm surge and those winds, it s not just water rising. it s water forcefully going inland. reporter: sure, let s talk about first of all listening to al roker. if you don t feel that in your gut there s something wrong. this information is very powerful and really demands attention. it s water and it s building up into what al called that wall, and it comes in, so right now the national hurricane center says that that storm surge in this area here could be upwards of 12 feet. now, if the storm comes in late, late on thursday, early friday, it is even higher because of the high tide. so the amount of water coming in actually goes well over the first story of buildings and homes in this area and begins ....
