The decades-old border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka escalated into a political slugfest on Wednesday as both states hit out at each other for raking up the issue with claims and counter-claims.
Karnataka’s deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi said Mumbai should be made part of his state, and urged the Centre to at least declare it a Union Territory. His suggestion came after Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray raised the border issue at a public event, demanding that the disputed areas be carved out into a union territory till differences are resolved. ....

mocked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over Belgaum dispute requesting the Central government to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory.
Mumbai should be included in Karnataka. Until that is done, I request Central government to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory, news agency ANI quoted Karnataka Deputy CM as saying.

Bengaluru: Reacting to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackerayâs claim over Belagavi, Karnataka has sought to appropriate Mumbai; till Mumbai is made a part of Karnataka, the state wants Maharashtraâs capital to be declared a Union Territory.
In a sharp reaction to Thackerayâs statement made on Wednesday, Karnataka Deputy CM Laxman Savadi said: âBelgaum is ours. We condemn the statement of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The Mahajan Committee report is final. We, the people of Mumbai-Karnataka region, have a right over Mumbai city. We now demand that Mumbai should be made a part of Karnataka and till the Union Government takes a decision on this, Mumbai should be declared a Union Territory.â ....

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came in for criticism in Maharashtra on Thursday after its Karnataka leader and Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi said that Mumbai should be declared a Union Territory.
“Earlier, we (parts of Belagavi) were part of the Mumbai region. My demand and that of the people of this region is that Mumbai should be attached to Karnataka. I further demand that the Centre ensure that Mumbai is declared a Union Territory,” Mr. Savadi reportedly said. ....
