DVIDS - News - Army-funded researcher receives award for mathematical theory

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. A U.S. Army-funded researcher who developed a mathematical theory for complex systems such as networks, power grids and the human brain, received a prestigious scientific award.
A new approach for solving dynamic problems will allow advancements, predictability and system protection in a wide range of fields, including network security, fluid dynamics, soft robotics and energy-efficient design, researchers said.
Igor Mezić, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mathematics at University of California Santa Barbara, earned the J. D. Crawford Prize.
The prize is awarded every two years by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Dynamical Systems. It recognizes contributions from a paper addressing fundamental issues in the dynamical-systems field. ....

What’s new? As Nicolás Maduro forces dissidents to flee Venezuela, exiles have come to play important roles influencing both the opposition’s political strategy and international policy toward Caracas. Analysis of social media suggests that exile can lead opposition members to use strident rhetoric and advocate aggressive ideas more often than domestic counterparts.
Why does it matter? Internationally facilitated negotiations remain Venezuela’s best path to peace, and the new U.S. administration might very well pursue them. Their success rests on all parties’ willingness to accept compromise. Conciliatory attitudes could be undermined not only by crackdowns in Venezuela but also by prominent exiles’ views. ....
