38-year-old Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Riley was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday (December 29). He was a three-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department and served as a corrections officer and patrol deputy. Services will be held Tuesday (January 4) at 11 at the FCHS gymnasium, and visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7, with a first-responder walkthrough at 6. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sean Riley Benefit Fund at Trust Bank in Cisne. Burial will be in Cisne Cemetery, and the community is asked to show their support by lining the procession route. On Tuesday, January 4th starting at approximately 5:30pm, Fairfield Memorial Hospital staff will be gathering on the front lawn of the Hospital for a candlelight prayer vigil in memory of Deputy Sean Riley. The public are invited to attend this event. In the event that the ground is too wet, the event will be moved to the Dr. Scranton Memorial Drive. One of the three men charged with the murder of Roger Courson of rural Edgewood in September has been charged with the attempted escape from Clay County Jail las week. 30-year-old Walter West of Edgewood was charged Tuesday with escape of felon from a penal institution. The incident occurred December 23 as West was being returned to his cell from a visiting booth. West ran from the jail, was pursued east of the jail to an area along the Little Wabash River approximately 100 yards from the jail. Clay County Sheriff Andy Myers and deputies established a perimeter in the area and requested assistance from other agencies. West was located about 15 minutes later under a root wad by the deputy who had initially pursued him. West was taken into custody without further incident. West and his co-defendants in Courson's murder Jamie Charlton of Salem and Christopher Gallatin of Centralia were in Clay County Circuit Court Wednesday for an evidentiary hearing. Trial dates have not yet been set. The Illinois Department of Public Health is adopting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation to reduce the number of days for isolation and quarantine for the general public. The CDC updated its recommendation on December 27, to decrease isolation for people who test positive from 10 days to 5 days if they do not have symptoms, but they must continue to mask for 5 days after isolation ends. These recommendations apply to all individuals, including those who are unvaccinated or are not boosted even though they are eligible. The CDC also recommended reducing quarantine from 10 days to 5 days for those who are close contacts to a COVID-19 case and have no symptoms, but individuals should continue to mask for 5 days after quarantine ends. Schools should continue to follow the IDPH COVID-19 School Guidance for children who have received the primary vaccination series and are not eligible for booster doses after 6 months. IDPH has already adopted CDC's updated guidance for health care personnel issued last week. Health care personnel and other specific groups and setting should continue to follow their respective guidance. The minimum wage in Illinois is set to increase another dollar on Saturday, January 1st. The new wage will be $12 an hour. Minimum wage workers are being encouraged to keep a close eye on their paychecks in the new year. Any time worked in 2022 must reflect the new $12 an hour minimum wage. Workers under 18 years old and who work fewer than 650 hours in a year will earn a minimum wage of $9.25 per hour beginning January 1. The youth minimum wage rate will gradually rise to $13 an hour by 2025. River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 17.71 feet, above the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 6.14 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 18.04 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 3.96 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 12.53 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 16.26 feet.
The IDPH is now reporting the latest COVID-19 vaccine data on its website http://www.dph.illinois.gov/covid19/vaccinedata?county=Wayne. As of this morning, the site showed Wayne County had administered 494 doses and had 100 people fully vaccinated. Edwards County had administered 86 doses and had eight people fully vaccinated. As a state, Illinois had received nearly 870,000 and had administered roughly 354,000. 25-year-old Lucas M. Carey, 39-year-old Brenda E. Fond, and 31-year-old Heath T. Winebarger were all sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court yesterday. Carey pleaded guilty to arson, Fond pleaded guilty to delivery of less than five grams of meth, and Winebarger admitted to violating his probation. All were sentenced to 24 months probation and 40 hours of public service work.
