Roald Dahl was an obnoxious anti-Semite – but that is no reason to cancel Willy Wonka's begetter
The reviews for the new film Wonka are somewhat mixed. Some critics have been impressed with the musical fantasy imagining the early days of Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Others say it’s appallingly “sugary and sentimental”. Two words that would never come to mind concerning Roald Dahl himself, who specialised in depicting cruelty and was, as I can testify, a man who possessed the most repugnant anti-Semitic ideas.
