Preserving Dignity Giving Day to support Orange County's vulnerable older adult population

On July 14, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) will host Preserving Dignity – a collaborative Giving Day aiming to raise $100,000 for seven nonprofits serving older adults in need throughout Orange County.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of millions of Americans, especially the elderly. In Orange County, there are more than 450,000 adults aged 65 and older, which accounts for 14.3% of the population.
[1] By 2045, this number is projected to increase to 17.3%.
[2] According to the Orange County Strategic Plan for Aging, adults will face a new set of economic, social, health, and lifestyle challenges associated with aging, and Orange County is not able to provide adequate support of this growing population.

Speech and Language Development Center partners with Orange County Community Foundation for "Empowering Possibilities" Giving Day

Speech and Language Development Center (SLDC) and 9 aligned nonprofits will partner with the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) on May 20 for Empowering Possibilities, a collaborative Giving Day to support people with disabilities living in Orange County. The 24-hour online effort aims to raise $100,000 for 10 nonprofits offering a range of education and supportive services, skills training and counseling, and community outreach programs.
Within Orange County, there are over 250,000 people living with disabilities, making up 8.5% of the community2. This Giving Day is an opportunity for donors to collectively support the nonprofit organizations providing the tools and resources necessary for Orange County’s disabled residents to achieve success and independence. At SLDC, we provide education and therapy to children and adults with special needs in an environment that nutures growth, inspires achievement and maximizes their potential. At SLDC, many students receive a 1:1 aid who is well trained to assist them in all their daily activities. Over 60% of our students have discovered how to communicate with the use of Augumented/Alternative Communication (ACC). SLDC provides over 23,000 hours in Adapted Physical Education, Counseling, Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapies in a school year.

"Help Them Home" Giving Day seeks to raise $1 million to support shelter and resources for homeless

On April 28, the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) will host Help Them Home – a collaborative Giving Day aiming to raise $1 million for 20 OC nonprofits working to combat homelessness and its devastating impact on our community. As the wide-ranging fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact our community’s most vulnerable individuals and families, this 24-hour fundraising opportunity comes at a crucial time.
There are an estimated 552,830 homeless individuals in the U.S.– 47% of whom reside in California. And locally, according to United to End Homelessness, there are nearly 7,000 homeless individuals – including more than 300 veterans and almost 700 seniors – in Orange County on any given night. According to the coroner’s office, more homeless people died in Orange County in 2020 than any other year.
