Kingdom of 10,000,000 White Leghorns. Chickaluma. The Egg Basket of the World. These are all historic nicknames for Petaluma, a charming little city in the agricultural bosom of Sonoma County. By the early 1900s a booming poultry industry, driven by a locally designed egg incubator, saw the area producing 120 million eggs a year. There were Egg Day parades led by Egg Queens, the world’s only poultry pharmacy and more money on deposit in the banks, per capita, than any other place on earth. That was back then. But how egg-centric is Petaluma… now? To find out, my partner and I drive into the country under a misty sun that looks kind of like a big egg yolk. We carry the determination of Cool Hand Luke to eat 50 eggs or explode trying.
