A NOW-FORMER GREENVILLE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY IS FACING CHARGES. AND WE’RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE INCIDENT THAT LED TO HIS ARREST. NOLAN: MICHAEL, THE NOW-FORMER DEPUTY’S NAME IS RYAN GIBSON. HE IS ACCUSED OF UNLAWFULLY ARRESTING AND INJURING SOMEONE. OFFICIALS SAY THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON JULY 25, 2020 ARREST WARRANTS SHOW 29-YEAR-OLD RYAN GIBSON WAS CHARGED TODAY WITH THIRD-DEGREE ASSAULT AND BATTERY, MISCONDUCT AND MISCONDUCT IN OFFICE. TODAY WE SPOKE TO BENNY JONES, HE SAYS HE’S THE VICTIM IN THE CASE. COMMUNITY ACTIVIST TRACI FANT SAYS JONES WAS AT HOME WHEN THE ALLEGED ASSAULT TOOK PLACE. FANT SAYS JONES WAS WITNESSING AN ARREST WHERE THE SUSPECT FLED. FANT SAYS THAT’S WHEN GIBSON APPROACHED JONES AND BECAME AGGRESSIVE AND EVENTUALLY SLAMMED HIM TO THE GROUND AND FACE FIRST INTO A VEHICLE. >> THE WHOLE TIME IT WAS HAPPENING, I WAS ASKING HIM, WHAT WAS HE DOING AND WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WHY. THE ONLY RESPONSE I GOT WAS GETTING BEATEN. MICHAEL: SHERIFF HOBART LEWIS SAID IN A STATEMENT TODAY THAT HE IS THANKFUL FOR FANT AND HER ACTIVISM. DEPUTIES SAY THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION AFTER FANT BROUGHT THE ALLEGED ASSAULT TO THEIR ATTENTION AND A FORMAL COMPLAINT WAS FILED. GIBSON WAS FIRED FROM HIS POSITION ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF AFTER THE INCIDENT TOOK
