Evacuation and maintaining security around the airport. people may be surprised to know that prior to the draw down, which the u.s. still had a presence, more of a larger presence in afghanistan, they shared a lot intelligence with the afghans and the afghans provided a lot of intelligence on groups like isis-k. that s one of the things that will be lost in the loss of the military presence and the taliban takeover. the afghan military no longer exists for the intents and purposes. the u.s. no longer has them as a partner. now the u.s. will have to rely on and they won t have the human intelligence sources they had on the ground. now the u.s. has to rely on overheld. signals intelligences that intercept. satellite constellation. you know, they had the ability to get things from overhead. it s nowhere near the same picture they used to have. i guess the short way of saying ....

Means by which we find any american who wishes to get out of afghanistan, we will find them, and we will get them out. reporter: the taliban say they will seek justice for the attack as coordination between u.s. forces and the taliban continues. u.s. commanders on the ground have asked the taliban to push out the security corridor around the airfield and shared some information to prevent attacks. we believe it s possible that others have been thwarted. we cut down the information we give the taliban. they don t get the full range of information that we have, but we give them enough to act in time and space to try to prevent these attacks. reporter: biden vowed that the u.s. military would attack isis-k in the wake of these bombings, but it s a far more difficult challenge. first, the assets are certainly there, whether it s attacking from overhead with fighter jets or gunships or carrying out a drone attack, the difficult problem is in terms of intelligence. without u.s. troops ....

MSNBC Andrea Mitchell Reports August 27, 2021 16:05:00

The difference between 3,000 troops and 5,000 troops and 3,000 troops and 7,000 troops is not that much. the difference between 3,000 troops and zero is profound because when you go to zero they take their equipment with them. they take all this overhead. they will now be trying to keep watching afghanistan from places like doha, from war ships, but there is no substitute to being there. so now it will be up to the taliban. maybe some special operations raid if they find a particularly high value target, but it will be very tricky for the u.s. to start droning even isis in afghanistan. the taliban are not going to like that as soon as the americans pull out they start droning targets even considered legitimate targets and the taliban will have fierce opposition for that. now it s probably up to the taliban to hunt these people down, and i think the taliban probably will. they are an enemy of isis. ....

Glass, and a stand-off force like the afghans to keep you know, screen people as they come through. so it was inherently a dangerous situation and, frankly, it was just a matter of time, if it was the islamic state, that they would through to do something like this. what really bothers me is the taliban is not in control of this, and you have these zealots running around. as far as i can see, and i will defer to the military experts, but kabul airport is indefensible unless we have a lot of troops on the ground. it is time to get up and leave. general clark, let s bring it to you. you are the military expert here. what now is the path forward as we have now seen how vulnerable the airport is and just how the lack of control that the taliban actually does have? it is vulnerable. i think you have to look at the people on the ground to tell you what more they need in security, if it can be secured. they may have assets they can put overhead, some unmanned aerial vehicles, they may b ....
