Bengaluru's 7% CFR last week its highest this year | India News

BENGALURU: The May 29-June 4 week turned out to be the deadliest for Bengaluru with Covid-19 case fatality rate (CFR) shooting up to 7%, the city’s highest in 2021.
During the period, Bengaluru witnessed 25,699 fresh cases and 1,797 deaths. CFR remained at 4.8% during May 22-28 though the city recorded 1.3 lakh cases and 2,037 fatalities. Case positivity rate is falling now. From May 29 to June 4, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) conducted 4.2 lakh tests and positivity rate was 6%. It was nearly 12% the previous week.
According to P Rajendra Cholan, BBMP special commissioner, the CFR in the past week “is visibly higher as the total number of positive cases is less”. “The average daily Covid positive cases are down to 3,500 in the past one week, whereas it was 6,000-8,000 a day last week. The absolute number of Covid deaths is less,” he said.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has woken up to a security lapse in the collection of COVID-19 test data that includes health records of citizens collected for its PHAST (Public Health Activities, Surveillance and Tracking) portal. This breach, which allows a hacker to access information by running a script, was brought to the civic body’s attention by the Free Software Movement of India.

In the wake of the second wave and increasing case load in the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is working towards doubling the vaccination rate to check the spread of COVID-19. At present, on an average, round 35,000 citizens are vaccinated in primary health centres (PHCs) and private medical facilities across the city every day. The BBMP has prepared a micro plan at the PHC level.
BBMP chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta said that two lakh vaccines had already been provided to the civic body. An additional one lakh will be provided shortly. This will help improve the vaccination rate, especially covering those aged above 45 years.
