p3s. that needs to be moved in the area to help identify was on the surface. >> now, alan, as you may know, the sailors call this stretch of the indian ocean the roaring 40s, both for its latitude on the globe but also for very rough seas and high winds. what do you think are the chances given the fact that the satellite images are days old, one that you can find where they are and if it's parts of the plane you can retrace over the two weeks all the way back to the crash site? >> well, that is still going to be problematic, even if it does turn out to be part of the aircraft, for the tides and winds and so on. we've seen this before in 1987, the south african lost a 747 that was talking to air traffic control when it went down. it was an on board fire. they didn't get out there time
aircraft uses less fuel, fly slower but can stay in the area longer. it takes a little longer to get to the location. so they each bring a different capability. the p-8 is the most advanced anti-submarine aircraft that exists. it's used for submarine warfare. the u.s. military gear on board, some of it is so advanced it's classified. but it can look down. between the p3s and the p8 which were previously deployed up in the bay of bengal, they have come up with more than 400 hits floating in the water, things that looked like it possibly could be debris. it was just garbage floating out there. they spotted those items out there and were able to not only find them but discount them as any sort of wreckage from a plane that might have crashed. it gives you an idea of how effective this gear is. so it's really, quite frankly, discouraging to hear that the p8
outcome. but i've been in the bottom of the space station with the biggest lens that we have staring at the sea and taking pictures of the surface and the vagueries of rerefleks off the water and even with the p3s, it's not nearly as simple as you would like it to be. if someone glances away or catch the wave the wrong way, trying to repeat a grid pattern to make sure they truly exhausted everybody they've looked. it's a really complex thing to do. it sounds like australians are doing what they do well and doing it as best they can. but it's still going to be -- all of the people in anguish, it gives them some hope but but no means is it closed yet. >> we're now dealing with nearly 3 million square miles that have to be searched and knowing what you do about that view from space, do you believe satellite
