New York lawmakers have introduced a bill to ban radioactive waste from being discharged from the Indian Point Energy Center. Improving air quality by lowering the acceptable levels of particulate matter or "soot" in the air is the goal of the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed new standards. If approved, advocates say they could save up to 20,000 lives a year and dramatically improve the lives of asthma sufferers and others with chronic lung and heart conditions. The EPA is seeking public comment on these proposed changes until March 28.

"Everyone has a right to breathing clean air."

The federal government is gathering public feedback on proposed revisions to air-quality standards for soot, and environmental voices in Wisconsin and elsewhere said they show promise but need to be stronger.

“The clock is really ticking against them,” one environmental advocate warned at the two-year mark of the Biden administration.
