You look at most big cities where most black folks live and you re looking at huge democratic political machines and people rely on that patronage, it s been ingrained. but the fact is, sean, you look at the black church, there is a surprising number of people who are very conservative on very important issues in society, but people don t want to hear about it, including gay rights. this is a reality. you talk about social values and the like. but once it goes beyond the political machine. you think about the music industry in this country, the whole hip-hop thing and that whole attitude and the poison they feed our young people. again, somebody is out there saying no, that s legitimate. that s authentic black. but if you show up in a suit and tie and if you re talk being improving the quality of our schools, oh, you re against the unions. that s not the black sean: what s frustrating to me is, i don t know of any national platform that has dealt with the treatment of black conse ....

i was hoping they wouldn t bring up that name. she s quoting ronald reagan saying that barack obama is going to destroy freedom of the country, quoting his speech against medicare. i think ronald reagan said it would essentially turn america into an unrecognizable country and one day we d look back and wonder what it was like when america was free. i think pretty much everybody, most seniors like medicare. the idea is that they are saying they want to get rid of it. republicans want to privatize medicare and social security, which is the same as getting rid of it. one of the freedoms they enjoyed before 1964 was the right to deny service under any circumstances to any black person that tried to sit on the stool. you couldn t sit on the stool or buy a coke unless you came in the side door. you had to sneak, could i please have a soda? that was the freedom. our freedom to deny patronage. what kind of freedom is that. freedom is not a response to a serious policy argument. are you ....

Who have large oil wealth, were able to provide patronage of various kinds, particularly in the gulf, have all survived. well, i think you have to take a step back and look at history how the middle east was divided up. this is one of the problems we face in political reforms in jordan. we re still living in the shadows of the cold war. during the cold war, it was more sort of the monarchy that were like the west and the republics that were aligned to the soviet union. and so maybe you have seen the reaction more in the republics than you have in sort of the countries that are either emirates or monarchies. but this is what makes the transition. to political form more difficult. in any country, 90% of the people are averse to being aligned to political parties. although we had this wonderful parliament outcome of 56% plus way beyond, i think, anybody s expectations. the challenge now and i see in jordan, specifically, the hard work for us is actually creating ....
