Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - COVID tracker: It starting to feel like the pandemic is almost over, but we're nowhere near the end

Published: 5/4/2021 1:02:05 PM
Last week the death toll from COVID-19 in New Hampshire passed the 1,300 mark. That’s more people than live in Hill or in Danbury or in 65 other towns in New Hampshire, and if deaths keep happening at the current rate, the toll will pass the population totals of a dozen more towns by mid-summer.
It’s a sobering reminder that even though we seem to be on the downward slope of our third surge in cases with hopes of a quiet summer ahead, the pandemic remains a tragedy and it remains in our midst.
That is hard to keep in mind if, like me, you’ve hit the magic two-weeks-after-second-vaccine-dose moment.

In this March 31 file photo, a nurse fills a syringe with a dose of the Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose COVID-19 vaccine in Uniondale, N.Y. The U.S. is recommending a “pause” in administration of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to investigate reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.
WOOD RIVER — The Madison County Health Department has suspended its use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
On Tuesday morning, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced it was pausing the use of the J&J vaccine. In a joint statement Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said they were investigating unusual clots in six women that occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.

Nursing Home Workers Hesitant for COVID Shot

Long-term care workers were among the first people eligible for vaccination against COVID-19 in Moore County, but many of them have yet to receive shots.
An average of only 49 percent of employees in nursing homes and assisted living communities had been vaccinated as of March 31, according to data shared by the local health department. Some of the lowest vaccination rates were reported at facilities where multiple residents died amid coronavirus outbreaks last year.
The department’s data showed that just 26 percent of staff were vaccinated at The Greens, a Pinehurst nursing home that is currently experiencing its third outbreak. Over 100 infections and 15 coronavirus-related deaths are linked to a previous outbreak at the facility.

WOOD RIVER — More COVID-19 vaccinations are needed before Illinois can roll back mitigation measures, according to Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.
“COVID-19 vaccination is one of the strongest, most powerful tools we have to fight this pandemic together,” Ezike said Thursday. “We have a vaccine and we’re elated about that, but it doesn’t mean that this pandemic is completely over.”
Amid increasing statewide trends in case positivity and hospitalizations due to COVID-19, Ezike warned of the ongoing resurgence of the virus.
