They Work On An App. They Deliver Groceries. And Now They Have a Union

When Oakland resident Chris Jasinski joined Imperfect Foods, he was happy to be at a place where he’d be an employee, not a contractor like grocery delivery workers for Instacart or Amazon-owned Whole Foods.
“That’s one of the good differentiators right out of the gate for Imperfect Foods versus other companies,” he says.
Jasinski has been at the company for just about a year. Several months in, he started talking to other workers about organizing. He was not the only grocery delivery worker who thought joining a union would be a good idea.

Despite Weeks of Union-Busting, Workers at Imperfect Foods Vote to Unionize

Despite Weeks of Union-Busting, Workers at Imperfect Foods Vote to Unionize
Companies like Imperfect Foods hold great sustainability potential, but that must not come at the expense of workers.
Truthout
Drivers at Imperfect Foods, a climate-conscious grocery delivery service, have voted to unionize after weeks of being manipulated and intimidated by union-busting consultants hired by the company’s management. The official tally was delayed by a company objection to an April vote, which the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) overruled on May 7, thereby certifying the election. It’s a victory for 80 of the company’s 1,500 total workers — delivery drivers in California and Nevada — 28 of whom voted in favor of being represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Local 5. Twenty-three workers cast ballots against being represented by the union and an estimated 27 other eligible workers did not vote.

Imperfect Foods teams up with food tech company that extends produce shelf life

Imperfect Foods
(NEW YORK) — Just in time for national stop food waste day, which took place on Wednesday, one online grocer rooted in sustainability is doubling down on its efforts to fight climate change.
Imperfect Foods recently pledged to become a net-zero carbon operation by 2030, and as part of that commitment will work with food technology company Apeel Sciences, whose natural, plant-based protective coating extends the life of produce.
The new partnership between the company that sources and delivers surplus and ugly produce that wouldn’t meet traditional grocery standards will roll out Apeel’s apples and eventually extend to other produce categories.
