James Cracknell has lavished praise on the Irish duo.
"Paul must've wanted to finish this with his brother but he had to form a new relationship," he told the BBC.
"Both crews have raced well because the Italians have been nip and tuck with these three, the Irish and the Germans, all year. I think both the Germans and the Irish stepped up for that final."

But they were beaten to the podium positions by gold medallists Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler from New Zealand, the Russian Olympic Committee, who won silver, and Canada duo Caileigh Filmer and Hillary Janssens claiming the bronze.
Glover, who won coxless pairs gold in London nine years ago and at Rio 2016, only returned to training in 2020 following almost four years out of the boat after starting a family. 
Glover insisted she was 'pleased' with their performance, telling BBC Sport: 'Right now I'm pleased we put everything on the line.
'We knew it was going to be really big, a big final to be in. Getting here was a tough route and so we knew when we crossed having spent everything.

Comeback rower Helen Glover said she was proud to finish fourth with Polly Swann in the Olympic women’s pairs final and eager to return home to see her children.
Glover, the dual Olympic champion chasing glory at a third straight games after almost four years off to start a family, could not quite claim another medal as she and Swann trailed in winners New Zealand, the Russian Olympic Committee and third-placed Canada.
While the 35-year-old – who became the first mum to row for Britain at an Olympics – missed another chance at a medal, she said she was proud with her efforts as she confirmed these would be her last games.
