Stalled progress in reducing maternal mortality globally: what next?
In February, 2023, WHO published a report on maternal mortality between 2000 and 2020. The report indicates that while substantial improvements were made in the rates of maternal mortality during the Millennium Development Goal era (2000–15), such hard-fought gains have faltered in many settings between 2016 and 2020.1 As the first report to present data reflecting the first 5 years of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) era, the WHO report details estimates and trends at the global, regional, and country levels—highlighting key disparities and areas of concern.
