Filling the void: the stats behind Galloway's magnificent form in Atkinson's absence

Melbourne City defender Scott Galloway's brilliant individual form has ensured his league-leading side avoided potential disaster when first choice right-back Nathaniel Atkinson suffered a season-ending injury in early April.
Atkinson went down with a high-grade hamstring tear in City's 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix in Matchweek 15, putting a premature end to the 21-year-old's sparkling A-League campaign in which he was nominated for Young Footballer of the Year in March.
It was Atkinson's ninth consecutive start at right-back for Patrick Kisnorbo's side, and the young defender was a key contributor to a club-record winning streak of six games notched along his run in the starting lineup.

When Richard Garcia was appointed as Perth Glory’s coach for this season, there were mixed reactions.
Many saw a former Glory player ready to give back to the club he played for, the club he knew well. His connection with the club gave optimistic fans excitement for the upcoming season.
Others saw an inexperienced manager with no track record – Glory was his first managerial stint – brought in to replace Tony Popovic, an experienced manager who had won us the Perth’s Premiers Plate in ’18-19, when we lost the grand final on penalties.

Thursday night preview: Melbourne City v Newcastle Jets - April 29

Melbourne City will aim to consolidate its lead on top of the A-League table with a win over Newcastle Jets in the first game of Matchweek 19 kicking off at AAMI Park on Thursday, April 29.
After Central Coast fell to a 4-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar in the final game of Matchweek 18, Patrick Kisnorbo's side have the chance to go four points clear of both the Mariners and Sky Blues with a win over the Jets.
Craig Deans' Newcastle outfit bring a dismal record to Melbourne, having gone 10 games without a win. The Jets sit last on the A-League table leading into Tuesday night's fixture against a City side out for revenge after Newcastle's 1-0 win in the first meeting of the season between the two teams on February 7.

The Central Coast Mariners will be desperate to get their Premiers Plate charge back on track against Brisbane Roar on Wednesday after going three games without a win.
More than 10,000 supporters packed out the Central Coast Stadium on Saturday to watch Alen Stajcic’s side let a two-goal lead slip in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Sydney FC as the Gosford-based club bid for a first A-League Premiership in nine years.
With Melbourne City and Adelaide United dropping points in the following days, the Yellow and Navy faithful’s dreams of lifting the trophy are still in tact – but a win against an in-form Brisbane side is almost a must for the Mariners to keep their challenge alive.

The path to the Premiers Plate just became clearer for the A-League's leading contenders after the competition's remaining fixtures were locked in place.
With the Central Coast Mariners battling to complete a fairytale rise from worst to first in the space of 12 months and title rivals Melbourne City gunning for their first ever A-League silverware, one guarantee is that history will be made in the coming weeks.
But there is no counting out an Adelaide United side that have proven they are capable of playing some of the competition's finest football, while Sydney FC will fight till the finish as they attempt to defend their crown and clinch an unprecedented fifth Premiership.

GOAL: Longo winner against Perth in Round 12 keeps Victory form rolling ahead of Big Blue
Canberra United, meanwhile, travel to face Newcastle Jets at No. 2 Sportsground (kick-off 6.35pm AEDT) with the hopes of securing a win to climb back into the top four.
The Green Machine trail Adelaide United in fourth by one point, but have a game in hand on the Reds.
A win over the Jets would heap the pressure on Adelaide to secure three points against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, March 21 - their last game of the season - to set Canberra the task of overtaking them once more in their final game of the season in Round 14.

Stajcic - Mariners take confidence to Melbourne as blockbuster clash with City awaits

Central Coast Mariners boss Alen Stajcic says Melbourne City are currently the form team of the competition - but that won't knock his side's confidence heading into the clash between two top-three sides at AAMI Park in Matchweek 13.
The Mariners drew 2-2 with ninth-placed Perth Glory on Sunday night. The league-leaders had to dig deep to earn just one point from the clash, scoring in the 91st-minute from the penalty spot to salvage a draw in wet and windy Gosford conditions.
The result leaves Central Coast seven points ahead of City on the table, who have played two fewer games than Stajcic's side.
