juror number ten. he s man in his stuff, these terms his from southern the southern part of delaware. and one of the things that we heard from the defense team as we were going through this trial was they believed that politics had a role in why hunter biden was even facing these charges. he said the defense team believe that the us attorney who was appointed by donald trump was essentially bullied into going after hunter because of criticism from house republicans and republicans in general. i asked the juror number ten, who did not want to be to show his face on television, whether their politics played any role in these deliberations. listen to what he had to say if anybody, was in that courtroom or in the jury room, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind no. i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up and aaron, we also he also told me that that the gun form that hunter biden signed back in october of 2018 when he bought the firearm that was the crucial piece of evidence in his mind and he believe that hunter biden lied when he signed it, and none of the other evidence from the from the from the defense to try to explain it away, really worked on the part of the jury one of the things that may come up by the defense team, they do they are weighing an appeal of this of this verdict is the fact that jurors never got to see a second oppression at that form, because the judge did not allow it. and so i asked the juror whether he believed that that would have made a difference. he said it would not have aaron sheep all right. i evan, thank you very much. outside that courthouse and having a chance to speak to turn number ten, which was obviously so fast thing is we d we d heard about the jury and their reactions and who they are all right. i m a panel with me now, katie rogers, i want to start with you because you have covered the biden family closely for a long time at the new york times and now we re seeing the president arrive in delaware, greeting his son. what are your sources telling you about how this has impacted president biden personally? well, i think everyone who has spoken to me who is close to the president and close to the bidens. they always really reiterate to me how much the president believes in his sons ability to stay sober. he s very proud on that level of his son and they always stressed to me that, yes, he is worried about the legal problems ahead for hunter biden, but he believes in his son s ability to continue his recovery. now, that said, the people close to him say that this is the thing that more than anything else he wakes up. if he s briefed by aids on gaza, the next immediate get thing is about his son or he is constantly in contact with his son. they speak at least once a day. so this is something that is going to add more weight to the president s mindset. he s already been quite worried about these legal problems, never having an end for his son. and this just adds to that, right? it didn t certainly at a crucial time in this case campaign. congressman buck, i wanted to play something else for you that juror number ten shared with evan perez about hunter biden. let me play it i did have empathy for him, for his addiction i don t wish that on anybody and especially correct. okay. let me let was the has to be a terrible dickson it comes from i think just significant that that juror says that after they unanimously convicted him on all counts. right. but still able to have that human empathy and obviously a lot of americans can relate to that who are dealing with this themselves or with others and their families, some sort sort of addiction the president though is to deal with the political side of this. do you think that he has managed this? appropriately as a father and as a president congressman yeah, i do. i think it s very difficult. you look at your son having an addiction like bad. the federal government, the congress obviously passed this law because folks who are addicted to drugs and buy guns are more likely to commit crimes. so certainly not a hunter biden category necessarily, but i think the joe biden president biden has done a great job of trying to stay above the fray and recognizing that his department of justice was a very difficult position attorney general merrick garland appointed a special counsel s so that that council would be independent and render independent judgment. and i think that people look at this case and recognize that it was done in an independent and fair way the idea that there may have been other crimes are really irrelevant. this this defendant totter biden, got a fair trial, a quick jury verdict, and i think that joe biden made the right statements after the verdict ryan, the thing is this this is not done for hunter biden or for joe biden, the whole family, right? he can still appeal just even on this case, i m i m talking separately from the tax case, which is very serious. but on this case alone, is this going to drag out for the remainder of election between sentencing appeals and all kinds of this process 100% because he s going to both appeal on the grounds that certain evidence should not have been excluded from the defense. and he s going to appeal on the grounds that under the second amendment, the constitution, that this particular criminal provision should be invalid and none of that is going to be sewed up before november. in fact, we ll probably at least a year from now before any of that gets stored up, even conservatively speaking, well, even conservatively speaking. all right, so that s a long time, katie, and it s certainly shows in terms of weighing on the president all the way through the election way beyond, but through the election i mentioned how joe biden, the first lady, was not able to get there in time today because happened so quickly. she wasn t actually able to be in the courtroom for the verdict but she was there almost every day. hunter sister was there is on its uncle a lot of other family members, his daughter testified ex girlfriends wives and we ve seen support from almost all of them on hunter and he s recovery. it has been something that clearly has damaged and hurt this family for a long time. they ve struggled with it what does the conviction mean, katie, for the whole family? i mean i think that this family has dealt a hunter biden has detailed his addictions over the years in various ways, whether it s through a memoir, through a lengthy magazine profile. but for the rest of this family, it s been a really long private, painful battle as we saw, this week during and last week during the trial. sorry these members of the biden family, onetime members of the biden family in current members recounted what was essentially they had all described as a held that they were in with him and a conviction is really the first time this very private battle has been laid bare for public consumption. so it s uncomfortable for them and they have had to sit there and here the shrapnel hit them yet again of hunter biden s choices have had to sit there and listen to him in his own words through his memoir, recount his drug use is a painful time for them congressman buck, president biden was asked about whether he would pardon his son right? on this crucial point, i want to play that exchange. it was with david muir let me, ask you will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes. you have congressman buck, how do you feel about this when he s saying that to show he believes in the system and he s not going to question it with a witch-hunt to rigged and all that, right? clearly, it is his son how do you feel? does he have to take this all the way to the mat? no. pardon? no commutation of his prison sentence, which by the way, he did not he did. not commit to or or do you think it would be appropriate and not hurt belief in the system if he were to commute his son sentence i don t think president biden wouldn t do anything until after the appeals are finished. number one, and that s going to happen after the election so he s going to have much more flexibility after the election whether he wins or loses to make a decision like this. now, if he were to engage in a pardon of president trump with president trump was victims of a federal crime at the same time that he pardon his own son. i think americans would understand a father doing that but i think he made the right statement at the time and that is i m not going to show preferential treatment to a member of my own family and a quick final word, ryan, just to be clear that this would go another year, you also have a very serious yes tax evasion charge, federal charge in california, which would carry significant present time that is underway. that s right. and the justice department said that it could carry up to 17 years in jail. and what s unfortunate for hunter biden is because you didn t do a plea deal. he will now have to convictions potentially steck up against each her to us sentencing guideline. the conviction that he just got today in delaware would count against him. he will not be a first-time offender if he is convicted in california. right. which could affect sentencing. i thank you very much. ryan. katie, and congressman, i appreciate all of you very much next trump and his supporters called the doj rigged and political. so what are they saying tonight? today. i ve given a speech on tighter tighter gun controls. yeah. and keeping guns out of the hands of felons and people who don t don t deserve them. and his sons on trial. i think yeah, it s just it s a crazy time in america full of folic contradictions, but, yeah, but this was, this was a sad day and i think it was inappropriate result. i don t think he s going to jail for very long. my off the cuff assessment is scheduled for 1016 months as the first defender and the judge may well go below that and give him a probationary sentence. who knows? yeah. it s not going to be a punitive situation i think it s very hard for republicans to insist that this is somehow a ruse. well, i mean it s sort of amazing. it seems to me that if you did get a guilty verdict here, that this would be something that everyone could say. okay. well, there was it can t say that it s rigged or during goes one way or the other. and yet somehow that there are still some finding a way to say this is basically a single letter virgo kn. yes. she says again and then she says, shame, shame on you did that tone sound like the same woman, the same tone that you d heard yes it was defiance. it was just very, very clear that she wishes shame upon the lgbtq community and yeah, i definitely recognized the tone for sure. so that secretly recorded conversation went on for about six minutes. at one point, mrs. alito said her husband asked her to stop flying flags and she said she would do it temporarily. i want and to play that part of the exchange for you, emily, here it is nazis believed that he should control the hell. do you never can tell and he s like please don t put up a flag. i can i won t do it because i m deferring to you but when you are free of this nonsense i m putting it up and i m going to send them a message every day, maybe every week the change in the flag s, there ll be all kinds i mean, look, she you talked about how she glare at you, called you a fascist. she spat on your car. i known these flags were flying at his homes. and he says, a passerby on cambridge street confronted with a flag, flag flanked by government flags standing just outside the entrance of boston seat of government would likely conclude that all of those flags convey some message on the government s behalf. so it s clear he s saying if they fly the flag than any reasonable person would think that you support what that flag stands for. and yet he s saying it s not the case when they fly at his own home is there any doubt in you did interact with him and i know he didn t really speak. you didn t say much in those interactions but is there any doubt in your mind that a supreme court justice sees the hypocrisy here so he must see the hypocrisy and maybe just doesn t care it seems to me that their behavior and these words maybe they feel like they re above the law. and a lot of ways they are. we don t have an enforceable code of ethics for the supreme court they essentially police themselves and that ruling is really important because it only proves me right, and it proves all of us, right? who think that he of course knew about the flags. of course, he he endorsed them and him making those statements to congress that oh, my wife did it. i don t know about it. oh, i did it because of a neighbor. those are lies and this is important for our country. we need to, we need to hold our elected officials accountable, and we need to have a congressional hearing. we need to enact term limits. we need to have an actual code of ethics that they have to abide by. alright, well, emily, i exclusive never before heard audio recordings of justice samuel alito speaking to an undercover progressive activist. that s what we have tonight. that is in addition to the bomb shell recordings released yesterday and we will definitely want to hear these recordings when we play them. if you have been wondering how those secret tapes were made in the very first place, how activists and judges on the highest court in this land, that begins almost ten years add to this day when the supreme court handed down a major decision. supporters of the hobby lobby cheered today s victory. the oklahoma family that owns the chain of 500 craft stores claimed providing insurance coverage for some forms of contraceptives under obama care would be the equivalent of paying for abortion. that will allow companies to opt out of any law they judge incompatible with their sincerely held religious beliefs. the hobby lobby decision. the majority opinion was written by justice samuel alito and one of the first signs that conservatives on this court were willing to go after reproductive freedoms no matter the consequence. in the wake of the dobs decision, hobby lobby seems like the canary in the coal mine in more ways than one. november of 2022, the new york times offered key reporting about how the hobby lobby decision came to be. for years, conserve tiff christians had been engaged in a campaign called operation higher court. that operation was to personally court and influence the supreme court s conservative justices. it was spearheaded by a man named reverend robert shank who would recruit christian couples he called stealth missionaries to gain access to the judges and impress upon them the importance of conservative christian values. the justices were more likely to let their guards down at the historical genders. see a justice, boldly approach, he told the couples. if given the opportunity, bear witness to biblical truth, but don t push it. he said. your presence alone at the historical society events telegraphs a very important signal to the justices. christians are concerned about the court and the issues that come before it. that strategy appears to have paid off. some of shank s stealth missionaries were able to build enough of a relationship with justice alito and his wife martha anne they obtained advance notice of the hobby lobby decision before it came out. that breach, that unprecedented breach foreshadowed the leaked dobbs decision striking down roe eight years later and that specific strategy of using the supreme court s annual historical society dinners as a way to gain access to supreme court justices, turns out that, too, is relevant again just this week. the dinner is a yearly event where wealthy donors give money to a non-profit dedicated to supporting the court s history in exchange for their money, the donors get to rub shoulders with the justices and their spouses. as it turns out, conserve tiffs weren t the only ones in on this little arraignment. last week, lauren winsor who happens to be a member of the historical society bought a ticket tothe event. when she got in, she pretended to be a conservative donor. she approached some of the conservative justices and secretly recorded her conversations with them. nbc news has not heard the full tape of what was recorded so we cannot say for certain where edits were made if any were actually made. tonight, we have some brand new never before heard audio from that event to play for you. you will hear something familiar to what was on the tape s release yesterday. justice alito who is aggrieved and frustrated. who is nakedly partisan and totally unconcerned by appearing to be all of those things in front of a total stranger. remember, what we heard yesterday. as a catholic and as someone who really cherishes my faith, i just don t, i don t know that we can negotiate with the left in a way that like needs to happen for the polarization to end. i think that it is a matter of like winning. i think you re probably right. on one side or the other, one side or the other is going to win. i don t know. i mean, there can be a way of working together or living together peacefully. but it is difficult. there are differences on fundamental things that can t really be compromised. they can t really be compromised. so it s not like you re going to split the difference. that s what i m saying. i think the solution really is like winning the moral argument. people in this country who believe in god have got to keep fighting for that to return our country to a place of godliness. well, i agree with you. i agree with you. remember, at this closed door cocktail party, windsor was able to get justice alito s wife to explain her deeply personal motivation for flying two insurrectionist flags in front of the alito homes. that is a story that had just scandalized this court and these recordings this week would seem to suggest mrs. alito has no shame about what she has been doing here. in fact, quite the opposite. after deriding feminazis who have been critical of the scandal engulfing her husband, she made clear these flags are explicitly her form of resistance and response. you know what i want? i want a sacred heart of jesus flag because i have to look across the lagoon at the pride flag for the next month. exactly. and he s like oh, please don t put up a flag. i said i won t do it because i m deferring to you, but when you are free of this nonsense, i m putting it up and i m going to send them the message every day. maybe every week i will change the flags. i made a flag in my head. this is how i satisfy myself. i made a flag. it is white. it is yellow and orange flames around it. and in the middle of is word vergogna. it means shame. just the be clear here, justice alito has publicly stated his wife did not fly the flags to associate herself with the stop the steal movement or any other group but it seems clear his wife very much sees the flags as a form of political expression and a response to what she believes are liberal attacks. it s okay. when they come back to me, i ll get them. i m going to be liberated and i m going to get them. what do you mean by they? there is a five year defamation statute of limitations. i don t know who you mean by they. get them. the media. okay. so, martha anne alito, the wife of a supreme court justice say she has a plan to get back at the media suing for defamation and thinks she will have the opportunity to do that in the next five years when she is free of all this nonsense. is sam alito s wife telling us something about justice alito s retirement plans? how concerned should we be that a supreme court justice s pows is talking about the american media with open contempt? tonight, we have brand new audio from that same event where justice alito himself tells us what he thinks about the fourth estate. the press. the other voice is an associate of lauren windsor s who was also at this event. i just wanted to ask you why do you think the supreme court is being so attacked and being targeted by the media these days? it is a simple reason. they don t like our decisions and they don t how we anticipate we may decide some cases coming up. that s the beginning and the end of it. and there are groups of very well funded by ideological groups that have spearheaded these attacks. that s what it is. gets a lot of money. and they have spent a fortune investigating clarence thomas for example. you know everything he has ever done his entire life. and they ve done some of that with me too. but you know they look for nit little thing they can find and try to make something of it. nbc news reached out for comment from samuel alito and his wife but have not heard back. joining me now is lauren windsor. progressive activist. lauren, thank you for being here. i know you have had a busy week so far. let me start with the new sound your organization, your colleague has given us. there are two parts of this new tape that strike me as concerning. alito says the media has not liked how the court has decided cases and may decide upcoming cases, was that a window into what may be coming down the pike the next two weeks? how did you interpret that? i interpret it as a harbinger of bad things to come. did you get the sense when he was talking about the media and specifically citing propublica and their extensive investigating about clarence thomas. that these stories are very much being shared behind closed doors of the supreme court. his media awareness seemed to be relatively high. oh it s very high. he already had a sense of grievance when i first spoke with him in 2023. but it was much more pronounced this year. two conversations that ali and i had with him. can we talk about the context here? for those of us who have not been to supreme court historical society events, is this what happens at them? we have two bomb shell series of reports about conversations, advocacy campaigns and attendees from the supreme court. i initially read the report in the new york times about reverend shank. that played into my going in the first place. but i didn t read that report and think i should become a member now. it really was incited by the propublica reporting on clarence thomas. justice alito wants to rail about the money taken by propublica for invest good faithing public servants while clarence thomas is not disclosing millions of dollars of gifts from gop donors. i have no idea what propublica s finances are, but as someone who is an independent journalist, i would imagine that the money that clarence thomas has taken probably rivals the budget of propublica in any given year. it is such a good point. what did you hear in alito s explanation for that? did you hear, it seems there is no contrition. but is not even an acknowledgment there was any wrong doing on the part of clarence thomas in accepting potentially millions of dollars in unspecified gifts from conservative donors. i mean, you know, it is not vergogna bay verbatum. i don t consider that paying for tuition or getting a free rv loan. these are all things he has accepted from gop donors. it would be a different story if this was just about vacations he was taking with harlan crow and his wife and family. most people would write it off as oh, it was a trip. most people would not consider traveling with friends or associates as being something that is that big of a deal. but that is not what we are talking about with clarence thomas. it is another order of magnitude and it has been going on years. i guess some part of me is surprised that you not knowing the alitos, you are just a random member of the historical society is able to even get within shoulder rubbing distance of a justice and draw him into conversation about some of the incendiary topics in the country. the partisan divide. how did it unfold when you were in the room with the justice? it should be stated in the guidance for the events, the historical society says if you broach topics that are before the court, it may be grounds for you to be kicked out. so there is aprocess. how do i approach someone with that not only are judges supposed to be really the height of discretion. the height of you know, judgments. right? i definitely went into this assuming i was not going to get anything news worthy. in 2023, i did not get anything news worthy. the scrutiny has intensified so much and his grievance level is much more piqued that unlike clarence thomas who did not show up to this dinner. but has been reported to have shown up to it many times, and he didn t show up in 2023 by the way. that alito would probably attend anyway though he was undergoing this intense media glare. sure enough, he was there. and i think it was, i can t say what was in his mind so i don t know if in 2023, he had the the same level of grievance and it changed over the course of the year. there s a couple of options there. did it change? was it hard to get him to talk? at the very end of this conversation, he says are you a lawyer? it wasn t like you had offered any biographical information other than having a husband who was not in the room. how did you actually get into conversation with him? did you just go up to him and start talking to him? so the reason i brought up my husband was that in 2023, i came with a male friend. so, the context of it was we had a conversation, after dinner in 2023, my male friend was with me. he was not that wasn t as aggressive. but also indicative of what we were trying to get at. was he acting on bias. and i do believe that american people deserve to know. is the supreme court so compromised that we do not really have impartiality that bedrock of our judicial system. i think hearing it from his mouth that he cannot be impartial that some things cannot be compromised, that needs to be fuel for when they tell school moms they are domestic terrorists because they don t like what is taught in the classrooms. we could go into it but we won t. a trump campaign statement released today calls hunter biden s trial nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family. and in lock step with the party front runner, the chairman of the house oversight committee said the work will not be done until the department of justice investigates everyone involved in the biden s corrupt influence peddling schemes. joining me now is charlie psychs. charlie, thank you for joining me. this criminal conviction is a distraction from the real crime family. is this going to work? it was awkwardment it is awkward for the talking point it was all rigged. that the biden justice department was weaponnized only against republicans. but, we live in a world in which the reality and the facts have a hard time catching up with the spin. and you can see how deeply invested republicans are in their talking point about the biden crime family so it is not a shock they will continue to repeat those talking points. over and over and over again. but i do think the contrast and the reaction to the conviction of donald trump and the conviction of hunter biden has been very, very telling here. this will come up at the debate and you though donald trump will try to make an issue of the fact that the president s son is a convicted felon which will be awkward being a convicted felon himself. but democrats have been making this point. and the media have been making the point that there are a number of democrats facing indictments under the biden justice department. not just the president s own son. they don t feel the need to explain that at all. they will just go with the spin. i wonder who the spin is for. you talk about the reaction. this was the statement from the president of the united states after his son is convicted of felonies. as i said last week, i am the president, but i am also a dad. jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. so many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be strong and resilient in recovery. as i also said i will accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal. jill and i will always be there for hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. nothing will change that. i mean, that just, it is a very strong statement. it is a tough statement for a father to make. and i feel like that just undercuts whatever the republican argument is of the rigging of the system. among the voters that matter. the conviction of hunter biden shows the system is not rigged. it also shows this is the way the rule of law looks. this is what it looks like when no one is above the law. and president biden is also said, you know, has said on the record, that he will not use his pardon power to free his son if hunter biden gets a prison sentence. now, there are some people skeptical about that. but i don t think there is any reason to doubt his word at this point. and again, this creates a really significant difference between the tantrum donald trump and his supporters have thrown and the acceptance of the rule of law and the decision of a jury presented with all of this evidence. the point you are making is who is this for right now? almost everything republicans say is for the audience of one is for donald trump. this is what the base wants to hear. but, that is not the group of voters who will be deciding this election. and not to wax too poetic about it charlie. but embedded in biden s statement is a call to empathy. right? for those who have fallen for people who have addiction and are trying to make it through a dark, dark period. versus trump who is all grievance all the time. and i think we think a lot of things. we don t know a lot about where this country is headed but appealing to people s sense of forgiveness and empathy doesn t seem like a political strategy that has an expiration date. am i being too soft here? this is something that is so routine and it typically takes hours. to the extent there have been things that have been different for him. they have only been different in his favor. most defendants have to come there in person. it is a drab office. these things take hours. there are reports his probation interview took half an hour. this is an opportunity for probation to ask the type of questions that a judge might want to know on sentencing that don t come out in the trial. so this is somebody obviously, this defendant is somebody who is so well vetted everybody knows everything. but for most defendants, the judge doesn t have a sense of who they are as a person. what their family situation is. their immigration status is. are they using drugs so a lot of people know this about donald trump. but, so you could say well, half an hour, maybe all you need. but the fact is this is them doing their due diligence. to the extent it is on zoom. the lawyers there. it is only half an hour to tex tent that it is rigged or different, it has only been in his favor. the other piece of this that he likes bringing up is the presence in this case on the da side of matthew calangalo. he previously worked at the department of justice and now works for alvin bragg and they have literally used him as the missing link of joe biden and alvin bragg. let me say for people who are not familiar, this is how trump talks about him. he is a radical left from the doj who was put into the state working with letitia james and put into the district attorney s office to run the trial against trump. we will take issue with it. put into? passive in that statement. but you have gone between the doj and the doj s office. is that a normal thing that happens and now in line with reality is this argument? in the letter, just today, the department of justice said this was conspiratorial speculation. i think it is something a lot more sinister. it is an attempt to undermine law enforcement. first off, the manhattan da s office and doj work together all the time. there are joint task forces on terrorism. on hate crimes. there is a joint task force that looks at the filings that banks file. the suspicious activity reports. there have been joint cases prosecuted by the department of justice and the manhattan da s office against banks like standard charter, ing. there have been cases every day that are deconflicted between the department of justice. they don t arrest the same person. people go back and forth. i went from the manhattan da s office and back. robert morgan, the most famous manhattan da who served for 35 years from 1975 to 2010, prior to becoming. he was an obama plant. is that you are telling me? a stooge of the administration. it is preposterous, there is no sense these cries of foul play will end any time soon. this is all coming to a head on july 11th when there is the sentencing hearing for trump and i guess i wonder what your expectation for that is. and whether there is anything to be done around the cries of foul play in a rigged system that are inevitably going to come up no matter what he is sentenced. it is such a hard decision for the judge and you wouldn t wish it on your worst inny or both sides. nobody should want him to go to jail or want anyone to go to jail. it s a sad day. the prosecution is virtually going to be asking for jail time. the defense is virtually going to be asking for a sentence of a conditional discharge saying he has been punished enough by the felony. and there will be outcry on both sides. i don t know there is any way through the political thicket of it other than to say this is a judge who has been around the block. he will be taking this seriously and fairly and i think you will see a sentence that is sort of free of some of those political considerations. something that he will be, maybe down the middle. both sides will be able to make of it like a rorschach test and they will be able to argue around it. well, that is not exactly, you are not giving me the inside dope on what you think it would be. but look. for all of that we have seen, it feels like the volume will only increase into july 11th. thank you for helping us through this. coming up, trump appointee judge aileen cannon tosses out part of trump s indictment in the classified documents case. but first, some very orwellian messages being broadcast from your local news stations. that s next. your local news stations. that s next. i m out of breath, and often out of the picture. but this is my story. [music playing] a slow network is no network for business. that s why more choose comcast business. and now, we re introducing ultimate speed for business our fastest plans yet. we re up to 12 times faster than verizon, at&t, and t-mobile. and existing customers could even get up to triple the speeds. at no additional cost. it s ultimate speed for ultimate business. don t miss out on our fastest speed plans yet! switch to comcast business and get started for $49.99 a month. plus, ask how to get up to an $800 prepaid card. call today! in an order that otherwise denied yet another attempt by the defense to end the criminal prosecution of donald trump over his handling of classified documents, judge aileen cannon has given trump a partial win. the paragraph describing after he left the presidency, he allegedly showed a classified map to to someone. he admitted at the time he shouldn t show the map to someone without security clearance and told the person not to look too closely at it. while it illustrates how allegedly cavalier he was with classified information, prosecutors never charged trump with crimes involving sharing classified information and now the judge has struck it from the indictment. joining me now is bradley moss. bradley, how big of a deal is it for prosecutors that this map incident has been struck from the indictment? it certainly is not a critical factor, all this means is it is not sitting in what is otherwise known as a speaking indictment. it is still information that prosecutors can bring out at trial and will litigate to ensure that they can bring it out is sort of the evidence of a prior bad act in the context of mr. trump s intent. his motive. his willingness to conceal this information. that he knew he had this records. this is a minor victory for mr. trump. the issue is that it took so long. it could have been resolved weeks ago. it never needed to have taken this long. if it is not a significant win for trump, is it indicative of a broader tension? because throughout this case, it seems like it is ratcheted up in recent months. there is maybe not a volley. the judge does not seem happy with jack smith and his team. the tensions continue to boil. in a hearing just a few weeks ago, it got to prosecutors were so upset. and frustrated with their attempt to try to explain to judge cannon their view on the case law and how certain legal precedents applied, that the judge had to basically counsel them to calm down. none of us were there. i don t know how badly that got out of hand. but it is never a good sign if you are lawyer and the judge tells you to calm down. judge cannon has chosen to take a slow methodical approach here. she has not granted donald trump anything of substance yet at any point in this case. but because of how she has dragged it out, it is almost guaranteed this will never see the light of day. they will never get the trial before people go to the voting booth in november. that seems guaranteed. there is an open question about whether we will see the trial period. but that will depend on politics. i do need to ask trump filed another motion to dismiss today. this one says the fbi destroyed evidence by not showing where it was in contrast to nonclassified material. trump says he didn t pack the boxes and know what was in there. how substantiative is this or does it matter? is it just more delay? i think this largely is a delay tactic. if hope at best they might get an evidencey hearing. how the boxes were organized this way. whether or not there is something of allegations of bias and improper storage. on on the merits, it doesn t absolve trump of the idea that he willfully retained the documents. he knew he had them in 2022. when he turned stuff over to the archives. he is talking with his lawyers they are telling him to turn it over. we keep finding stuff. it will not ultimately change anything. but it will quite possibly the way judge cannon handles things but it will drag things out a little more. we are

situation room thanks very much for watching. the news continues. next on cnn leader is reportedly caught saying we have the israelis, right where we want them a federal jury hands down guilty verdicts for hunter biden on all three counts against him making him the first child of a sitting us president to be convicted of a crime the wife of us supreme court justice samuel alito s secretly recorded what she said about the controversial flags outside her home, and the people who criticize to the flying them cnn breaking news but we begin this hour with breaking news a new report released just moments ago from a un commission finds israeli authorities and palestinian militant groups, including mass responsible for war crimes and other violations of international law. the commission has also found israel responsible for crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza following the october 7 hamas attack. i want to bring in cnn s jumana karachi, who joins us live from london. thanks for being the un says it has evidenced at both israel and hamas have committed war crimes or report just handed down to mount. and what can you tell us? well, linda, this is a these are the findings of the un commission of inquiry on the palestinian territories and israel, this is a body that was set up by the united nations human rights council back in 2021 during the offensive in gaza at the time. and now for the past few months, they have been investigating the events of october 7 and events since they have released to reports, 200 pages long in total so with their findings on both what is happening in gaza during these military operations, as well as what took place in israel on october the seventh. and what they say here is that they have found hamas and six other palestinian armed groups it s responsible for war crimes committed in israel. and they also found that, as you mentioned, that they accused israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza. now this linda, they say, is the first in-depth un investigation into the events of october 7 and events since they accused israel of obstructing their investigations, not giving them access to israel or palestinian territories, but they say that this investigation relied on interviews with victims and witnesses. they went through thousands of open source item is that they verified, they say through advanced forensic analysis, they had hundreds of submissions satellite imagery, forensic medical reports. now, when it comes to october the seventh, linda, these are the main findings. they say that these militant groups, hamas and these other groups are responsible for the for war crimes including intentionally directing attacks against civilians murder or willful killing, torture, taking hostages, including children and more. now, these crimes, they say, we re committed by these militant groups as well as palestinians. they say in some instances, in civilian clothing, they identify they say patron s indicative of sexual violence. and concluded that these are not isolated incidents, but perpetrated in similar ways in several locations primarily against israeli women. and the indiscriminate firing of thousands of projectiles against israeli towns and cities. they say that causing deaths and injuries is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. then you ve got the report on what is happening and what has happened in gaza during these military operations, there accusing israel of these war crimes and crimes against humanity, including you including using starvation as a method of warfare, murder, and willful killing intentionally directing attacks against civilians, sexual violence extermination, gender, persecution of palestinian men and boys, murder forcible transfer and the list goes on. what they say is when you look at the immense number of civilian casualties in gaza, the widespread destruction they say that this is the result of what they have found to be a strategy to cause maximum damage, disregarding the rules of war, the principles of distinction shin proportionality, an adequate precautions. and what they say is the intentional use of heavy weapons with a large destructive capacity in densely populated areas. they say that you know, all these evacuation orders that the israeli authorities have issued, that that was not adequate, that that was not enough. that they found that civilians as well came under attack when taking these evacuation routes or in designated safe areas and then they go into the humanitarian situation where they say they have found to be a total siege of gaza imposed by israel. and they say that this as what they found here to be the use of the weaponization of aid and access to gaza. saying that this was what is happening amounts to punishment. collective punishment against the civilian population and they also found instances they say a significant number of civilians who posed no threat intentionally killed by israeli forces. and in these cases, linda, we have to mention that they mentioned, they cite to reports that were reported by us at cnn over the past few months. now we have now reached out to the israeli government for comment. but it s worth mentioning here that they have made their position very clear on this commission. they said that they are not going to cooperate with them months ago. accusing this body of being an anti-israel and anti-semitic body, they have had issues with members of the commission. and of course, this is coming we ve seen the tensions rising, the relationship deteriorated between the united name nations and israel over the past during the conflict, as much as israel has come under criticism for its military operations in gaza, it has accused the united nations and several of its bodies and of an anti israel bias and not being fair towards israel. but we will we will continue to try and get more common from israeli authorities today on these findings, linda yeah, we will stay across history or de john monocrop. good to have you with us on this breaking news story. thanks very much we are following more breaking news out of israel, whether military says a large missile barrage has been fired from lebanon towards its northern territory. the idf said about 90 projectiles cross the border in total with some marking fires seen as ben wade, him and following developments for us and joins us live from a root. good to have you there first ben, so they re fighting it. the israel-lebanon border is continuing to intensified is take us through this escalation yeah i mean, what we re what we re seeing is real intensification overnight, there was a strike in the town of zwei. you wear we re hearing reports of four people killed. and in fact his butler on its telegram channel has come out and said that four of its fighters were killed, including a senior commander by the name of tlaib sammy abdullah now, we don t know if they were actually killed in this strike in southern lebanon because his butler never says where they re people were killed. but it appears that this is a is, described as a commander. so in response, it appears hamas has fired a volley of rockets from the lebanese sayyed, where hearing more than 50 the israelis are saying as many as 90 according to the israeli media, it is caused fires in parts of northern israel. now, video has come out on social media showing that most of those rockets fired from lebanon have been intercepted and intercepted presumably by the iron dome system, but certainly what we ve seen in the last week is that his bulla is used because in weaponry that seems to be somewhat explosives, did apparently say that anyone else would have seen these these charges dropped with this case drop if he wasn t as well-known, just how unusual is it for someone we know criminal record to go to court for an offense like this it s very unusual. i saw some statistic that you ve talked about less than three to 5% of individuals in this situation would have ever had charges brought. and even if charges were brought most likely this was the kind of case they would have resulted in a plea deal, not the kind of case that would have occupied the time and resources that we saw the government put forth and you can t help again, but look at all of the personal and very embarrassing information that was revealed during this trial, it seemed like the trial was about embarrassing hunter biden and therefore embarrassing the entire biden family more so than seeking justice, i was quite surprised. i should say, at the outcome at the verdict by the jury, i thought there would be jury nullification. i thought the jury would look at this and say this just doesn t pass the smell test. there s something blatantly unfair about this prosecution but they looked at the facts and said they put aside of the reality that this was the president s son. and reach their conclusion. and like democrats have been saying throughout the day you have to accept the verdict the jury, and i m prepared to do that, but i was surprised by it of course hunter biden does face and other trial in september over his failure to pay his income taxes during a years-long crack alcohol spending binge. should that case b. of more concern to him? woke absolutely much much more serious case of very easy to prove cases where there are allegations of failure to pay federal income taxes the allegations here is that he failed to pay over $1 million over a three-year period. but i think we re going to see something happened in the tax evasion in case based on what we saw in the case that just resulted in the conviction, and that s probably a lot of testimony about his drug use, about his addiction that probably had something to do played some role in why he did not pay his federal taxes. again, this is the case linda that ordinarily would have been resolved by plea deal and remember, there was a deal that was interred into by the special prosecutor and biden s attorneys that would have allowed for both the cases, the gun charge case, and the tax case to be resolved without going to trial. and so given that it is going to go to trial, the second case in september does tuesday s guilty verdict potentially raise the stakes for any future sentencing? absolutely. yeah. again, i don t think he has much jeopardy when it comes to the convictions today, the nature of the charges, his background, what we expect to see in terms of mitigation however, the federal income tax evasion charges we ve seen very a high-profile famous people serve jail time on very similar charges. so my estimate is that to the extent there is jail time and that hunter biden has to serve any jail time. it s much more likely to be related to the tax evasion case than it is with respect to the gun a diplomatic source tells cnn that hamas is neither accepted nor rejected it. let s get right to cnn s oren liebermann live in tel aviv with the latest. so where do things stand as we re waiting on us secretary of state john, this will be an incredibly important statement from secretary of state antony blinken because it will give us the us perspective and whether blinken sees a path forward here, that is what we need to hear as well as from the countries. how do they view the boss response? president joe biden put forward a us back proposal 13 days ago hamas finally responded yesterday according to a source familiar with the talks, they offered some amendments to the proposal israel, according to an israeli official view that as a rejection of the proposal, but it s unclear how blinken the country s the egyptians, the crucial negotiators here view that and whether there s a path forward, that is what we hope to to learn, or whether once again, this entire effort has fallen apart when it comes down to the details as it has so many times before. meanwhile, in the midst of this blinken diplomatic flurry throughout the region, the un has issued a report of the first months of the war the most in-depth investigation carried out by the the un commission of inquiry to this point. and it concludes that both israel and palestinian militant groups, including hamas, have committed war crimes and violated national humanitarian law at the beginning of the war, the investigation looks at october 7 to december 31st, the end of last year. so the first two-and-a-half months and in it, the un concludes the both israel and palestinian militant groups carried out acts of torture committed sexual violence and intentionally attacks civilians. the findings are based on interviews with witnesses, victims media reports, as well as open in source material that they were able to verify. perhaps not surprisingly, the hamas portion of the investigation focused on october 7, and that is where the un found that hamas intentionally targeted civilians, carried out acts of murder and torture, outrageous upon personal dignity, dignity, and taking hostages, including children. now it has to be noted that the un found that israel has in systemic and widespread way targeted civilians in its campaign in gaza. and it s bombardment of gaza. israel did not cooperate with the report and dismissed it or rejected it earlier. today as anti-israel discrimination coming from the un. john in oren, it s been an intense several hours between israel and hezbollah inside lebanon over israel s northern border. what hundreds of missiles fired into thrill approximately 200 rockets at this point, this is some of the most intense fighting we have seen across that border. and sometimes it gets even close to this level, the fear of course, is even further escalation in a region that has already seen escalation question over the course of the past couple of weeks. so last night the idf says it carried out a strike in southern lebanon that took out a hamas hezbollah commander. abu tallied in response, we are seeing this barrage for some 200 rockets that have sparked fires in northern israel enforced evacuations. the fear here is a further escalation can open up another front in the war. and that s exactly what we re watching right now. and to see where the news broke yesterday, donald trump s staunch supporters for right media personalities still maintain justice was not served. donald trump junior even suggesting that the case was done in order to and i think it goes against the elc of who we are as americans and our faith in the criminal justice system this will be very difficult to get a reverse alon. it was handled by judge noriega, who is an experienced judge who didn t play any games. she was as fair to the defense as she was to the prosecution so quite a different sort of tone there over the exact same verdict from a jury of their peers. but then you go into further into the right-wing media sphere and you get something else, you get what they say is essentially a larger conspiracy theory, even though this was a guilty verdict. here is right-wing talk show host early kirk in a tweet, he says, hunter biden, guilty. jan, the true crimes of the biden crime family remain untouched. this is a fake trial trying to make the justice system appear balanced, don t fall for it. this is also something that donald trump campaign tout. it s pushing the conspiracy theory that president biden has taken money from foreign governments and that this whole trial was just to try to cover up for it, tried to give something to take away from what they say is a larger, unfounded conspiracy theory in this sunday of that donald trump junior also spouting in a live conversation on x saying it s not even close to justice, saying it s trying to create the illusion of equal justice under the law. and this goes to show you how the far fringes of the protein trump media world. they have drifted into just sort of automatic conspiracy theories that the default is a conspiracy theory when the do s does not justify their point of view that like a republican strategist two does real republican campaign says, quote, it throws a bit of sand in the gears of people s suggesting the biden department of justice has been engineered to go after trump. we have this. i think we re going to graph pick it up one feature of the modern republican party is ignoring facts that don t support the argument in sometimes embracing the conspiracy theories that do what about that? although it can be, i know we just played the two clips from fox news, but i imagined if i wasn t watching msnbc last night because of course i was watching cnn. but if we had, i got to match them just noticeably more quiet than it would ve been two weeks ago after the conviction, new york. and so look, both sides are going to play the politics it s the way they feel they need to on this. clearly the trump campaign s going to try to highlight the inadequacy they felt in their case and downplay what happened yesterday, the same way you re hearing pretty much silence outside of a pretty basic statement out from the white house yesterday about hunter biden s conviction yesterday here s the truth of it. all this race between donald trump and joe biden right now. so static that both of these have had relatively little impact on the actual results of any poll right now, this election at the end of the de is gonna be decided by a very, very, very narrow set of swing voters. and those swing voters are likely going to say the talks and all their houses, they ve already disapproval, both candidates, this just adds to that fire are going to ultimately vote on what they believe is in the best interests for them and their families in november. and i think the first campaign to recognize that and grab onto that is likely going to be the candidate that wins in november i will say the reaction for most democrats has been respect the rule of law and to the trump verdict, it was respect the rule of law. and with republicans, the response to the trump verdict was outraged and the response to that hunter biden verdict is conspiracy. there is a vast difference here in those reactions. i do want to ask you, chuck joe crowley, if former congressman from new york, it as far as making a statement, democrats saying the quiet part out loud says, quote, it s the silver lining. they weren t looking for maybe suggesting in some ways this helps president biden in his reelection i think that it s distinguishable because the younger biden is not the president. and so what you get to see is joe biden be a caring father for a son who had a substance abuse program who was in one of those who i think gets sympathy, people always run to their corners on the right or the left and that tried a small group of folks would decide the outcome. but when you can personalize the president, whose demagogue on the right all the time because of his age or anything else they can find and he can become more human as a political consultant who runs campaigns every single day those are the little moments i m looking for when a president can be more human and not just this thing that we see on the news all day long or i want to get your reaction to something that paul i think we have the paul ryan sound all so do we have paul ryan talking on fox? we don t have paul ryan. well, paul ryan, the former speaker of the house, went on fox news, matt yesterday and said the types of things that paul ryan has really said, frankly, since 2020, he said that donald trump isn t fit to be president. and he said it right on fox news for many conservative viewers to hear this upset i should say, supporters of donald trump, including congressmen troy nehls, listen to what he said paul ryan, you re a piece of garbage. you re a piece of garbage. and we should kick you out of the party for paul ryan to say he s not vote for donald trump. that s the problem with some of our republicans. its guys like that. don t go spout in your mouth often, same euro conservative. your spit in the face of the leader of our party, donald trump. i m grow up a little bit doesn t really sound like big ten. they re mad no. i mean, look, if you you mentioned that this foot paul ryan been saying since 2020, that s been made, been saying it publicly since 2020, but it s essentially what he s been saying even privately since 2016. and there s been a literal books written on on that, so i don t think this really comes as much of a surprise to anyone. there are certainly going to be a sliver of the party which is going to say they re knocking support donald trump as the nominee. and what s going to be interesting by nicely looking at polling every single day what i m looking for is, which can t is going to be able to hold onto the larger share of their own party, going november, it s amazing, despite talks like this, despite discussions at division and the republican party, despite high profile republicans saying they want support doctrine, he still maintains actually much stronger course of work from registered republican voters than joe biden does from democratic voters. and that just gets the core of one, the bigger political challenges for the white house right now now is that it s upwards of over 20% of their core based right now, it s saying they may not support joe biden or donald trump is holding almost anywhere between 85 to 90% of his own party right now. so despite paul ryan basically saying ways been saying for almost a decade now, not much has changed that i ll trump s still as of today as a stronger fold on the republic welcome party than joe biden does on the democratic party. and that s why you re seeing in the head impulse right now? yeah. chuck, what about matt s point there? paul ryan saying what he says, who does that actually convince well i would push back on that just a little bit. we ve had elections last night in ohio and every tuesday we ve had an election and all these states were republican primary motors got to pick on who they wanted and about 80% have picked trump to his point but 20% of pick nikki haley, who ain t even running for president no more. so i wouldn t say he s got that consolidated. we got our own problems with democrats but our base is pretty secure with joe biden s one has been getting about 90 or 95% and what do you see for paul ryan represents a lot of common sense economic driven republicans in the suburb who were sick and tired. of donald trump. there was a primary internationally, a special election in ohio yesterday, ohio s sixth congressional district in a district any trump won by like 29 points where the heavily finance republican candidate, one. but by around ten points or even a little bit less, any source of concern there, matt no. i mean, look, yeah, you re seeing a bit of a juxtaposition compared to special elections almost ten years ago, republicans traditionally have had habitual voters on their side, older voters, voters with college degrees. lately, those are two groups have been shifting to democratic party while the republican party is doing much better with voters without college degrees and even younger voters who are much harder to turn out in a special election scenario like we saw in ohio yesterday. i think you re going to see likely a republican carry that district again by 20 plus points in the november general election. it is an interesting dichotomy though you go back just a few cycles ago. chuck and i probably on opposite pages about looking at these special election results. it is the scenario right now we re republicans are doing better in presidential elections because they re pulling out different voters who may not show up outside of the big, the big show every four years. now, there is really something happening interesting in the special luncheon with the high and low propensity voters there. thanks for pointing it out that mauer is great to see you chuck wrote that culture as hostages now single, most effective and most immediate way to end the suffering of people in gaza to end the suffering of palestinians and israelis alike to tackle the humanitarian assistance crisis, to prevent the conflict from, further escalating and spreading to other places is to get ceasefire that allows us to get to work toward a more durable end to the conflict here again qatar has been tireless partner in the prime minister personally, a tireless partner in working to mediate a ceasefire and a hostage release something that the prime minister and i first discussed here on october 13th and many times since 12 days ago president biden s set out a ceasefire proposal rooted in core principles of releasing all the hostages surging assistance into gaza guaranteeing israel security providing a path to an enduring and to war. and starting the massive reconstruction for gaza the entire world almost without fail has been behind this proposal and we heard it again and again and again. individual countries pronouncing themselves in support in this region and beyond. important groups like the g7, the honorably palestinian authority israel and of course just two days ago, the united nations security council leaders in the region that i ve met with over the last couple of days they have reaffirmed that. again and again and again so we re waiting on one response and that was the response it s from hamas and as the prime minister said, last night, we received a response hamas has proposed numerous changes to the posel that was on the table. we discussed those changes last night with a different colleagues and today with the prime minister some of the changes are workable. some are not here in a nutshell is where we stand a deal was on the table that was virtually identical to proposal that hamas before on may the sixth a deal that the entire world is behind a deal israel is accepted hamas could have answered with a single word yes instead hamas weighted nearly two weeks and then propose more changes a number of which go beyond positions that had previously taken an accepted as a result, you heard the prime minister say this the war that hamas started on october 7. but this barbaric attack on israel and on israeli civilians we ll go on more people will suffer. palestinians will suffer more, israelis will suffer but in the days ahead we are going to continue to push on an urgent basis with our partners with qatar with egypt to try to close this deal. because we know it s in the interests of israelis, palestinians. the region indeed, the entire world and we all three that the deal has to be grounded in the principles at the ceasefire proposal that the entire international community supports there s something nelson s critical and the prime minister alluded to it it s also crucial that we get from the immediate ceasefire that we re working personally to achieve to an enduring end and in order to do that and to do that effectively we have to have plans for the day after the conflict ganzen, gaza, and we need to have them as soon as possible for months. we ve been working with partners throughout the region on such a plan and that was also key focus conversations i ve had over the last couple of days in the coming weeks, we will put forward proposals for key elements of the day after plan, including concrete ideas for how to manage governance security reconstruction that plan is key to turning a ceasefire into an enduring end to the conflict. but also turning an end of war into a just and durable peace. and using that he s using that piece as a foundation for building a more integrated more stable more prosperous region over the course of but what s now my eighth visit to the region since october 7 everyone that i ve engaged with has made clear that this is the path they want to pursue. now i can t speak for hamas or answer for hamas and ultimately, it may not be the path that hamas wants to pursue. but hamas cannot and will not be allowed to decide the future for this region that s people enough dialogue and majorly less. so i lower zero on had known have numbering connected jazeera what we ve just been listening to is secretary of state tony blinken can he in doha and these are his first remarks. first real response since they have received the response from hamas to the hostage and ceasefire proposal has now gift is 0% remaining unchanged on a monthly basis, right? so the index pretty much remaining flat. the last it s how we saw this, you d have to go all the way back to july, i think of 2022. so you certainly like to see that. i want to talk really quickly about sectors on a monthly basis because this gives you a sense of where prices are still rising and where they re falling. so shelter which has been really stubborn shelter, you think the price to put a roof over your head, think about rent. you think about there s a component for mortgages. so that increased again on a monthly basis and food slightly increased. but as you can see on this graphic here, just so slightly on the other hand, we saw prices fall for gas in a pretty big way. we saw prices fall for apparel as well, and airline fares also came down. so the reason why this is really important in general, but certainly on a day like today when we re getting hit with a double whammy effect of economic event is it just gives us a sense, not just of where prices have been, but also where rates are going. and when we hear from jay powell, the federal reserve chairman, and about six hours from now, we don t expect this softer inflation report to necessarily change what we hear from him, then we re not expecting a rate cut. this meeting, but perhaps now that we re getting more welcoming inflation data, maybe that means a rate cut. maybe later this summer, maybe early this fall, which after the string of inflation reports that we have been getting, that we re actually hotter than expected that was even a big question. so for change, i come with some are better than expected news, inflation cooling for the month of may, we ll wait a few hours to hear what j power has to say about this. i m sure he will when you re looking at the symptoms of heat sickness, you re looking at maybe dizziness, headaches, some cool and pale skin. is that could be a sign of heat exhaustion. you want to watch out for that if it gets worse, you could even be working at unconsciousness and confusion for symptoms of heat stroke. so these are things that we need to watch out for. again we ve had this extreme pete pretty early in the season. so you ll want to make sure that you re looking at exercising either early or late to avoid that pq, you wanna wear lightweight, light-colored closed drink lots of water. remember southern baptist convention in indianapolis will decide if it will essentially ban churches with female pastors are standing. is this is likely to pass the band seen ryan young joins us now with the latest ryan, what are you hearing? john this is likely to pass from what we re learning just last year, they had a preliminary vote and it seemed like the members went along with this, but i should tell you this is big news because you re talking about some 13 million members who are part of this church organization. and what we know, the 10,000 members will be having that discussion today. there will be a debate something that will be monitoring throughout day. but what we know is almost 47,000 churches are linked to this association. on top of that, women working in pastoral roles at about 100 churches. and this could affect black church across the country. but one of the things that people want to talk about is the fact that supporters believe this is biblically necessary. listened to to pastors talk about this breakdown and why this vote could go one way today women have had a prominent role within the ministry and pastoral positions within the leadership of first alexandria for over 44 years first alexandria stands before you today as a testament that we can maintain a fruitful partnership with churches. the take a different stance on women and ministry we find no joy in making this recommendation, but have formed the opinion that the churches egalitarian beliefs regarding the office of pastor do not closely identify what the conventions adopted statement of faith yeah. john, obviously i said we will still monitor this throughout the day last year that preliminary vote was cast and it looked like this will pass. sometimes they now again, like i said, this could affect 100, hundreds of churches. they ll have to make the decision how they want to move forward. but something we should also say, this is in their constitution, the doctrine actually states that only men can be pastors at one church. you had women pastors only doing their pasturing to women and children. so there s big discussions about how this breakdown will happen, how it will move forward, especially in this changing, changing landscape across the country when it comes to people going to church. but this debate will happen today. the vote should happen later on, and we ll bring it to you john alright, ryan young. thanks very much. kate joining us right now is referencing victoria rob powers. she s the first female senior pastor at the royal lane baptist church in texas. reverend, thanks for being here and just to bring everyone up to speed, your congregation is an autonomous baptist church, not affiliated with a southern baptist convention but your experience is so important here because this is not the first time a church has been ejected from the southern baptist convention over female pastors why do you think they are doubling down on this? yeah that s right. thanks for having me i think one of the reasons why they re doubling down on this is because they re trying to maintain power. i mean, studies show that to maintain power, you have to constantly exert power. i think they re doing this in an effort to exert power. the irony is the southern baptist convention is losing power because it s losing influence. a decision like this will inevitably lead to the disfellowship of hundreds of churches, which means the convention will significantly dwindle and size rafat, this feels very strange to ask, but i shall, which is have you ever witnessed any negative impacts? of having a female pastor in a church yeah. i actually grew up in the southern baptist convention, which is funny that you should ask that. and as i, as you mentioned earlier, royal lane is not part of the southern baptist convention, but we were in fact we left the convention in the early 90s because of their discrimination of women and ministry. so in many ways what we re seeing is not new. the convention has a long history of excluding women administrate, especially from leadership roles. i think the point i was trying to make have you ever seen having a female pastor leader church and a senior role that it s been a problem for a church in terms of actual spiritual faith and leading a congregation for separate from its connection to the, to the convention sure. thanks for that clarification. no. i haven t seen that. i mean, i think our church in particular has seen a lot of fruitful ministry from the result of having a female and a pulpit. it s also helpful to just expand the number of voices that we hear from. so to. choose to only reserve the office of pastor for men is to limit ministry and limit the possibilities of what god can do the reverend, we heard the reverend of the man who is leading the alexandria church. his name s robert stevens speaking there saying this is a sad moment for us. but we also recognize that god has a future for first baptist church. and i had read, used speaking to, i believe as a local community newspaper earlier this year and talking about women women in clergy and the impact and you say often i tell people, you can t be what you can t see what does this movement from egalitarian beliefs mean for young kids growing up in the southern baptist churches all over the country right now yeah. i can t help but think about all those young girls in these churches who will never know what s possible for them. because as you said, you can t be what you can t see. so it s disheartening to think about the ways in which we re limiting their imaginations but i actually remain hopeful because if my religious experience tells me anything it s that god is bigger than the walls we tried to put around god. so i m confident this won t be the last word for women in baptist life i wanted to ask you if you could speak with the clergy of the first baptist church in alexandria today, what would your message be? reverend yeah, i would tell them to keep going to be courageous in their prophetic witness and to remember that there are many examples of women and leadership throughout the bible of a southern baptist just convention likes to hold that the office of pastor is reserved for men alone. and at that somehow is qualified by scripture. but that s just not true. we see women in leadership roles across the bible as they serve as judges, prophets, apostles, the first witnesses to the resurrection were women. so we wouldn t even have a church today if it weren t for women. so i would tell them to press on to keep going and to remember that if the son of god can come from the womb of a woman, then surely the word of god can come from her mouth now that is a perfect note to end on a
