Quality education essential to closing the growing global skills gap

With rapid educational expansion in many developing countries, much progress has been made in terms of access to education. According to a new IIASA-led study, being in school is however not the same as learning and this expansion in quantity may come at the expense of quality, with the possible negative implications of the current COVID-19 pandemic on schooling possibly exacerbating the situation.
Given that skills are one of the key drivers of socioeconomic development, a global and consistent analysis of human capital - broadly defined as the skills acquired through formal education - that considers not only the quantity but also the quality of education is essential for policymakers to draw the right conclusions. Despite its importance as a key driver of economic growth and social development, the measurement of human capital for working-age populations, on a global scale and over time, is however still unsatisfactory. ....

County of Huron SLED Fund opens for 2021 applications


The County of Huron’s annual Supporting Local Economic Development (SLED) program opened on Feb. 8.
The program provides an opportunity for municipalities and registered non-profits to receive funding for projects, which target key regional economic development priorities. This includes COVID-19 recovery, workforce attraction, agriculture, and tourism or investment attraction.

County of Huron SLED Fund opens for 2021 applications Back to video
Successful projects will be provided up to $10,000 through the SLED fund and must be completed by March 31, 2022.
Recipients of the SLED program funding are required to use funds in a way that has a clear and measurable economic impact, includes substantial private sector participation, and must provide financial resources and support to the project. ....

China’s private companies come into play in Sino-African economic cooperation
King Deer Group, a private Chinese company specializing in cashmere manufacturing, has been doing business in Africa for the past 24 years. Its Madagascar factory remained unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to support people’s livelihood during this challenging period. “Thanks to maritime transport, the supply of spun yarn exported from China has not been interrupted. Our products are still being exported to Europe and North America”, said Zheng Haosheng, the group’s president.
King Deer is one of the many Chinese private companies investing in Africa. According to statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), private companies now account for more than 70 percent of all Chinese companies investing on the continent. The Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013, has clearly reinforced this trend. ....

BCC Launches A Collegiate Recovery Community


PITTSFIELD, Mass. Berkshire Community College (BCC) launched a Collegiate Recovery Community for its students last fall, and will expand its efforts into the spring 2021 semester and beyond.
The recovery community, Students for Recovery at BCC, is a shared space for students to give and gain peer support, celebrate recovery, pursue their college goals, and find success.
BCC s Collegiate Recovery Community, a collaboration between the Personal Counseling Center and Student Engagement, has been made possible through the support of a BCC Foundation donor. This donor previously helped fund the 2018 Hope and Health Conference at the College, coordinated by Dr. Kari Dupuis, Program Advisor for Human Services. ....
