Microtech Heralds Future of Weather Forecasting

Through UK Space Agency funding, STFC’s RAL Space has been granted government funding of £600,000 to develop a first-of-its-kind climate monitoring instrument which will be small enough to fly on board a nano-satellite. The Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder (HYMS) is set to transform the future of weather forecasting. It has achieved four times greater sensitivity than sounder technology on board the current generation of meteorological satellites and a hardware footprint 50-fold smaller.
Dr Manju Henry, Senior Systems Engineer and HYMS lead, RAL Space said: “Improving our understanding of the atmosphere’s temperature and moisture is one of the fundamental requirements to forecasting and mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change. Doha: In line with its commitment to improve and transform healthcare across the country, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) is collaborating with Qatar University (QU) to help advance its capabilities to conduct high quality and innovative biomedical research in Qatar.
The collaboration will enable QU to utilize QBRI’s core services with the aim of facilitating access to advanced analysis locally, which will help QU conduct more advanced research. For those wondering how dictators rise to power in a democracy, the recent events in the United States, sadly, provide a case study.
A leader with little or no regard for democratic institutions; elected representatives and officials who pledge fealty to the leader and enable the leader to pursue the assault on such institutions with impunity; and sections of the media that perpetuate falsehoods all conspire to set the table.
The recent actions of many Republicans in Congress reveal their commitment to democracy and their oath of office is wafer-thin or non-existent. For a vibrant democracy in the United States, the actions of this rump bode ill. Let us hope that donors, voters and good people assume the task of removing and replacing them in the near future. ....
