Erik Fronberg: The last year has taught us that parks matter

Erik Fronberg: The last year has taught us that parks matter
It is not only time to get outside, but to help the parks.

I’ve been reflecting this week on how important parks have become in the last year. My musings are in part inspired by participating in an Earth Day event on April 24.
The event was planned by students, including myself, in the University of Utah’s City and Metropolitan Department, in collaboration with Salt Lake City’s Public Lands Division, at U.’s Westside Studio. Volunteers from around the city came and helped plant flowers, paint a mural and wayfinding signs, and clean up litter. The pandemic has made gathering difficult and infrequent, so it was refreshing to see smiling eyes on the masked faces of strangers while we worked together safely in the open air.

Earth Day: Where Utah Stands on Wildfires, Air Quality and Drought • Salt Lake Magazine

Our climate is changing. We can keep arguing about what’s causing it or whose fault it is (or isn’t) and what we should be doing about it, but the reality is our Earth is a different place than it was one million years ago, 100 years ago and even one year ago.
Since last Earth Day, the severity of wildfires has continued to escalate—which, along with other factors, has contributed to our worsening air quality—and current drought conditions have warranted a state of emergency in Utah, threatening not only our water but our precious snow and ski season.

Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark in 2002.
Ramsey Clark, who was U.S. attorney general under President Lyndon B. Johnson and then, after leaving government service, redefined himself as a relentless critic of American foreign policy and as a courtroom defender of widely reviled figures such as former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, died April 9 at his home in New York City. He was 93.
The death was confirmed by a great-niece, Sharon Welch. The precise cause was not immediately known.

The son of conservative Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark, Clark grew up in the lap of the political establishment and was the last surviving member of Johnson's Cabinet. As a young man, he showed few signs of his firebrand future, but in the half-century that followed his 22-month term as the nation's top prosecutor, he underwent a remarkable political transformation and became a persistent voice of dissent against the government.
