Steven Smith Awarded Tennessee Historical Commission Special Commendation For His Books

The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced winners of this year’s annual Certificate of Merit competition. These awards are presented each May during National Preservation Month. The Commissioners’ Special Commendation category went to Steven Smith in Soddy Daisy, for authoring four books.
Since 1975, THC’s Certificate of Merit Program has recognized exemplary work by individuals, groups, organizations, corporations, or governmental entities to further promote historic preservation or the study of history in Tennessee. Nominations are solicited from the public in December of the preceding year and judged by category. ....

As Summer Events Heat Up, Organizers Contemplate The Future Of Festivals In A Post Pandemic World

The Aspen Ideas Festival will continue to be virtual this summer. Organizers said they ll return to an in-person event next summer, with a virtual option available for online audiences.
As more people get vaccinated and temperatures warm up across the country, people have nostalgia for the before times before the pandemic, that is. Recent data suggest that nearly two-thirds of Americans are intending to travel for vacations, and some are planning overdue family gatherings. Others still are getting back into specific summer habits, and looking forward to the many summer-long festivals the region has to offer.
Earlier this spring, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater announced a return to in-person concerts with limited attendance, and in the Roaring Fork Valley, some beloved events will once again be in-person. ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - For the first time in months, the Albany Museum of Art’s (AMA) “Homeschool Day” is back in person.
The museum says they stopped in-person learning due to safety concerns surrounding the pandemic. But now they’re back open, helping kids and sometimes parents, use art to learn.
Annie Vanoteghem, director of education and public programming, said students learn a variety of subjects through AMA’s exhibits. ....
