In the time since we graduated many walkways and buildings had been retrofitted to better accommodate people in wheelchairs. Back in 1990 student protesters had shut the school down for days making demands for such things like hiring a rabbi, offering kosher meals, establishing an intercultural center. Thosedemands at the time had seemed so radical. Today they seemed so reasonable as to be a matter of course. Oh, the irrelevance. The obsolescence. The creeping amount of aging before you even get old. The phantom of time haunted me as i drove back to the city in my station wagon. It followed me back to my apartment where i poured myself a glass of wine and was in bed by 10. In theensuing year the feeling of irrelevance became a near constant companion. It clouded my vision like the membrane on an eye of a lizard , shielding me from what i couldnt comprehend, staring me the mortification of my own cluelessness and it had me staring at myself in mirrors and avoiding mirrors. Host Rachel Louise martin the story you tell in your new book, a most tolerant little town, centers around clinton tennessee in the 1950s. Where is that and describe what it was like . Guest clinton is right on the edge of the mountains that make upppalhia. It is about anof knoxville and it is right on the gateway to coal mining country. Host if you and i were there in the 1950s what kind of a community would we find . Guest it was an interesting place in the 50s. It was very mixed up about itself. On one hand it was a small rural southern appalachian town full of coal miners and farmers and local business people. But it was also 7 miles from oak ridge, which was a secret city built as part of the Manhattan Project that built the first atom bomb and it was also about seven miles from nora stamm. Norris dam.
