AFP Updated at 1:15 p.m. ET on 2021-02-16 A tribunal here convicted and condemned five Islamic militants to death Tuesday for the 2015 murder of Bangladeshi-American secular blogger Avijit Roy, but his wife said the verdict did not give her closure and the roots of such violence needed to be investigated. The capital sentence by an anti-terrorism tribunal was the second one it handed down in less than a week against members of an al-Qaeda-linked militant group blamed for machete-killings of secular intellectuals in the South Asian country, particularly in 2015 and 2016. In Tuesday’s courtroom action, a sixth defendant got life in prison for issuing a death threat to Roy over his writings against religious extremism, and for provoking the machete-killing, which took place in Dhaka on Feb. 26, 2015. ....

Image Source: IANS News Dhaka, Feb 16 : A Dhaka court has sentenced five militants including fugitive sacked army major Syed Ziaul Haq to death in connection with the 2015 writer-blogger Avijit Roy murder case. Another defendant, Safiur Rahman Farabi, has been jailed for life, bdnews 24 reported on Tuesday. Judge Mojibur Rahman of Dhaka s Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Four of the five convicts who received capital punishment are Md Mozzammel Hussain alias Saimon alias Shahriar, Md Abu Siddiq Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Md Arafat Rahman and Akram Hossain alias Abir. Besides Ziaul, Abir is also on the run. ....

A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced five members of banned militant outfit Ansar-al-Islam to death and another to life for killing Avijit. ....
Of them, Zia and Akram are still absconding, while the four others are behind bars. Earlier, 28 prosecution witnesses, including Avijit s father Prof Ajoy Roy, who passed away on December 9, 2019, gave their depositions before the tribunal. During the closing arguments on February 4, the prosecution told the court that they were able to prove the charges against the accused and sought capital punishment for them. The defence sought acquittal for their clients during their arguments. On February 26, 2015, US-based Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya were hacked near TSC of Dhaka University by a gang of assailants when the couple was walking out of the Ekushey Boi Mela around 8:30pm. ....
