While a young man growing up in Columbia, Lloyd Jones observed the leadership traits of his father, who was an educator who later became a university president. Many of his father's demonstrated abilities in managing personnel within an educational institution helped to inspire the younger Jones to also pursue a career leading others, but in an entirely different organizational structure -- the U.S. Army.
