When Rebecca Handler’s father died from Alzheimer’s in 2013, there were, “unsurprisingly given our family, moments of hilarity,” the San Francisco writer recalls. She was in the room with her mother and her brother, Daniel, waiting to witness their loved one’s last breath and the stillness that followed. But instead, what came were false starts, as each last breath became another last breath. And then another.
Comic relief had entered that sacred space. And it wasn’t all that strange. For the Handlers, like many Jewish families, humor is an organizing principle of family life. There’s nothing quite as life-affirming as laughing together when you could be crying.

BURNHAM-ON-SEA artist Felicity Franks is donating a pet portrait to the winner of a 'Bake Off' event which is aiming to raise funds for research into Long Covid.
The Pawfect Virtual Bake Off has been organised by Bake4MECFS, and is fundraising for the Open Medicine Foundation (OMF), with donations going towards research into chronic diseases including Long Covid and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
Rebecca Handler, from the OMF, explained: “Early on in the pandemic, Open Medicine Foundation realised that a percentage of those who do not recover from Covid-19 may end up with ME/CFS.
"We're now leading a large-scale international study following the potential conversion of Long-Covid to ME/CFS - a chronic, life-altering disease.

Burnham-On-Sea artist Felicity Franks from Felicity Franks Portraits is donating a pet portrait to the winner of ‘The Pawfect Virtual Bake Off’, which aims to raise funds towards the treatment of Long Covid.
The event will be supporting the Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) towards medical research for chronic complex diseases with initial focus on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Long COVID.
Rebecca Handler from the Open Medicine Foundation explains about the medical research and where the donations will be going: “Early on in the pandemic, Open Medicine Foundation realised that a percentage of those who do not recover from COVID-19 may end up with ME/CFS.”
