Hughes "Uncle Redd" Van Ellis, one of the last three known survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, has died, according a family statement. He was 102.
Ellis was just a few months old when Tulsa's then-thriving Greenwood District, known as Black Wall Street, was destroyed by a white mob.
Hughes Van Ellis, a World War II veteran and author passed away on October 9 at a hospice in Denver, Colorado. He was 102 years old.
