Pakistan paradox: promising a peace it cannot deliver

Is this a peace outreach that’s doomed even before it has got to first base? Or have leaders in India and Pakistan realised it’s time to make peace in a world that has changed beyond recognition?
Most analysts reckon that the behind-the-scenes peace action is being driven in part because the US does not want India-Pakistan rivalry to imperil Joe Biden’s plans to exit the ‘Forever War’ in Afghanistan and get his troops home.
The first hint of backroom talks came after a calculated leak by the UAE envoy to Washington, Yousuf Al Otaiba, which revealed that senior Indian and Pakistan leaders had met in his country, which is a staunch US ally. What made the meeting especially significant was that the December 2020 interaction was between Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, the director-general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, and Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser – the two men at the top of the India-Pakistan strategic pecking order.
