.- Sylvain Sylvain, a key member of the New York Dolls, the influential though short-lived proto-punk band whose outrageous shows at Maxs Kansas City and other venues paved the way for the era of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, died Wednesday at his home in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 69.

Born Sylvain Mizrahi in Cairo, Egypt, in 1951, he emigrated to France with his family and then to the U.S. in 1961, settling in Queens, New York. His middle school and high school classmate Billy Murcia was also his partner in a clothing business and bandmate in a succession of rock bands. In 1971, the configuration of Murcia on drums, Arthur “Killer” Kane on bass, Mizrahi and Johnny Thunders on guitars and singer David Johansen took on the appellation New York Dolls. Mizrahi came up with the name: He and Murcia worked in a clothing store, and a nearby toy repair shop, the New York Doll Hospital, caught his eye.

New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain died on Wednesday of cancer. The news was confirmed on his official Facebook page with a tribute penned by Lenny Kaye. He was 69.
In April 2019, Sylvain revealed that he had been battling cancer for the past year. He launched a GoFundMe campaign in the hopes to cover medical costs related to his treatment.

New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain has died at the age of 69.
The founding member of the pioneering rock group passed away on Wednesday (January 13) following a battle with cancer.
The news was confirmed via an extensive tribute posted to his official Facebook page by former Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye, which you can read in full below.
"Sylvain Sylvain, the heart and soul of the New York Dolls, bearer of the Teenage News, passed into his next astral incarnation on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.
Syl loved rock and roll. His onstage joy, his radiant smile as he chopped at his guitar, revealed the sense of wonder he must have felt at the age of 10, emigrating from his native Cairo with his family in 1961, the ship pulling into New York Harbor and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.

Sylvain Sylvain, the punk icon and guitarist for New York Dolls whose riffs bridged the gap between punk and glam, died Wednesday. He was 69. His wife, Wanda O’Kelley Mizrahi, confirmed the musician’s death to
Rolling Stone.
“As most of you know, Sylvain battled cancer for the past two and half years,” O’Kelley Mizrahi wrote in a statement on his Facebook page. “Though he fought it valiantly, yesterday he passed away from this disease. While we grieve his loss, we know that he is finally at peace and out of pain. Please crank up his music, light a candle, say a prayer and let’s send this beautiful doll on his way.”
