Japan's Renesas to raise $2 billion via new shares to fund Dialog purchase

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corp said it will raise 218.5 billion yen ($1.99 billion) through a new share issue to help the automotive semiconductors maker fund its planned $6 billion purchase of Dialog Semiconductor.
In February, Renesas announced the acquisition of the Anglo-German chip designer and Apple Inc supplier in a bid to tap the growth in assisted driving technology and the roll out of broadband 5G networks that could spur connectivity across smart devices.
The two companies had been cooperating in automotive computing platforms since August. ....

Semiconductor-related businesses in Japan are enjoying robust earnings thanks to growth in demand associated with the global wave of digitalization.
Some logged record profits for their latest business years, while automakers in and outside the country are being forced to reduce vehicle output due to semiconductor shortages.
Major chipmaking gear-maker Tokyo Electron Ltd.’s consolidated operating profit for fiscal 2020, which ended in March this year, jumped 35.1% from the previous year to hit a record ¥320.6 billion. ....

Manufacturers and tech players are itching to be untangled from a web of challenges fomenting a global chip shortage that have derailed their production, but those looking to be set free are in for a bit of a wait.
In fact, some automakers fear they may have to live with the problem for years to come.
Earlier this month, Japanese carmakers reported their earnings for fiscal 2020 and the chip shortage was a major topic, as the supply strain has forced a halt to some production.
The gravity of the impact down the road seems to vary from firm to firm: Toyota Motor Corp., for instance, described it as “a small risk.” ....
