the survivors of the sandy hook elementary school shooting, graduating from high school. they were just first-graders when they tragically lost 20 of their classmates in that massacre 12 years ago tonight they still feel the weight of that loss this is such a monumental guy and we all can feel what we ve lost should been all royal classmates 391. one last time. and i just can t i gave you that. i can never be that. i think we all are carrying your memory through us and making sure that they re walking stage right there with us. the school s principal reading the names of all 20 students who were murdered in that attack, also leading a moment of silence and honoring, of course, the six teachers and administrators were also killed wearing white and green ribbons on their gowns, each inscribed with forever in our hearts to remember the victims it is a tragedy that has understandably shape the course of their lives. many of the survivors now activists, some of them meeting recently with vice president kamala harris to push for gun control thanks so much for joining us tonight. america hill, ac30 60 starts now tonight, not 360 breaking news, a gun, eight clips two axis, one, weighted whip, knives handcuffs, a stun gun one suspect. all we are learning about the man arrested in new york with all this in his suv. and what authorities think he had planned for it. also tonight, what happens when the attorney general of the united states is held in contempt of congress and the effort is led by a congressman famous for defying how subpoena and later this will both fill your heart and break it. randy k. with surviving first-graders of the sandy hook massacre. now, high school graduates john berman here, infer anderson and we do begin with the breaking news and i just want to show you again what new york police officers found in the back of a ford explorer, they pulled over early this morning in the city s queens borough. it is frankly terrifying seen as john miller himself, a veteran of the nypd and fbi, joins us now, along with former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe and john just just tell us what more authorities are learning about this man and what they found in his car? while they re doing the deep die, if you ve got the nypd detective bureau, but also the nypd s intelligence bureau, which specializes in counterterrorism matters and the joint terrorism i m taskforce with the fbi all peeling back as life on one hand, what you re not finding yet and may never find is that he was radicalized, that he was in contact with an overseas terrorist group or that he had a plan to commit an act of terrorism. the concerning fees, as you have very well-framed with pictures is that he was driving around in a car equipped to do so. not only the weapons, but a collapsible button with the words carved into it in arabic god forgive me. a social media page that displays, and this isn t secret information. i went to his social media page and looked it has a flag that has been used before by al-qaeda in one of the images. so they have to figure out what s going on with him from family members, what their hearing is troubled, having problems with drugs hugs perhaps meth paranoid, and somebody who who may just be going through some mental health issues. but the danger is clear. do they just pull this guy over randomly they saw that his license plate were covered by one of those plastic things you can buy them at auto stories, it s basically meant to thwart the red light cameras in the speed cameras on the traffic violation. they looked in the car and they said they saw a knife on the seat, asked him to step out of the car so a taser and then a gun also between the front seats. and that led to the arrest for weapons charges in the search of the car. so not complete luck that they found it, but it s certainly something that could have slipped through heading on the license great example, an andy mccabe will tell you this. i m how routine police works sometimes better than the best intelligence is. what can keep your head of one of these incidents, andy, that arsenal, that this man had in the suv can bind with the qualities that john just described there, how much damage couldn t have done oh, i mean, john, there s a there s really no no limit to what this guy could have done with that sort of arsenal. and the thing that really jumps out to me is the nine magazines, nine loaded magazines to go along with the glock semi-automatic pistol. i mean, that is someone who is ready to shoot oh lot. so even if there is no connection to terrorism here, even this is, if this is a lone actor, these very heads up on the ball, police officers may have stopped a mass shooting, may have stopped some sort of a stabbing spree in a large group of people which you can find anywhere on the streets of manhattan, pretty much anytime you want. so what they may have stopped here, well, we ll maybe never know. but no question. john s absolutely right. this is the result of really solid police work. taking a look at something that s clearly illegal, doing this sort of reasonable investigation that follows from that picking up on all the signs and taking a step to really make sure that new yorkers are safe. i can tell you that my former colleagues, john s former colleagues at the joint terrorism task force. i m sure all over this right now, they re john said peeling this guy s life back. but what they re most concerned about right now, john is who this guy may have been talking to. they want to fully frame out his network of associates, people, he s corresponding with on social media. what were those conversations in those communications like to the extent that they can be recreated, they want to know if this guy has anyone else in his orbit who is similarly armed or similarly inclined andy said the clips or what, what s most concerning, what about the mta vested in the police bulletproof vest? what does that indicate? that s interesting. the two least two deadly items on the table could be the ones that tell us the most an mta vest that will get you into restricted areas in the subway believing that you re a subway worker the police bulletproof vest is not the standard best it s the heavy, vest, it s the plate carrier that is meant to stop heavier weapons and he has put an nypd patch on it so we re talking about someone who is driving in a black suv that kind of looks like an unmarked police car with this other indicia you wonder what it was for nand just finally either is a day after that sources tell cnn at eight tajik nationals with potential ties to terrorism and possible links to isis members over see is were arrested in the us. again, the ipd stress is way too early to determine if this arrested eight has any connection to terror groups but you do get the sense that authorities right now are on alert for a potential attacks john this is a beacon. it should, it should really get people s attention to the fact that even though we re not talking about stuff like this, every day, our intelligence folks are law enforcement folks, people who are focusing on the counterterrorism targets and threats they are at a very high state of alert. we know this because what the leaders have told us recently fbi director christopher wray testified recently about the increased threat awareness from the community in this country that may be inspired by or connected to hamas actor. so there is a whole broad range you very concerning threats and we re fortunate to have those folks watching those things closely and became great to see a john miller will get you back to digging, find out what you can. thanks very much. more breaking news on capitol hill late today, the republican controlled house made attorney general merrick garland, the third attorney general to be held in contempt of congress. garlin now joins obama attorney general, eric holder, and trump attorney general william barr in the history books. in this case is for refusing to turn over audio recordings of interviews that president biden did with a special counsel, who later declined to prosecute him. but vote was both politically driven and somewhat rich in that one of those pushing hardest for this house judiciary chair, jim jordan fight a subpoena to appear before the house january 6 committee with us now, from capitol hill, seen as meloni s the nose. so how did the vote breakdown today, melanie, will john this vote fell almost entirely along party lines, just one republican that s dave joyce of ohio, voted against this contempt the dilution, while all republicans voted for it. and of course, all democrats voted against it. so now it s really up to the doj to determine whether they re or actually going to prosecute attorney general merrick garland, which of course is very unlikely to happen, especially since price on and biden did assert executive privilege over those audio recordings which were of his interview with the special counsel in relation to the classified documents case. but speaker mike johnson said, regardless of what ends up happening or not happening, this was an important step for the house to take. just listen. we did our job on the contempt i think it sends an important message. we re defending article one and ariff, the wording for oversight, and we have to do that we ll see what happens next. but i the house has to do its work and i m pleased with the outcome. so again, this is a largely symbolic vote. it s much more likely to end up in federal court than it is in a prosecution, but it is a dramatic escalation in the feud between congress in the doj with merrick garland now become just the latest attorney general to be held in contempt. the congress john. so we did mention that the congressman jim jordan, defied a subpoena to a b appear before the house january 6 committee. did he ever face any consequences for that? yes. so he never complied with that subpoena to appear before the committee to talk about his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election in the house, which was run by democrats at the time, opted not to hold him in contempt of commerce. so no, jordan did not face any repercussions for his decision to defy that congressional subpoena. but speaker mike johnson was asked at a press conference earlier this morning, how can republicans hold merrick garland in contempt for oh, congress for defining a congressional subpoena when several of their own republican members have done exactly that. but johnson just responded by attacking the january 6, but committee and falsely calling it an illegitimate panel. john, we ll get to that milliner zone with thanks for being with us. appreciate it with us. now, maryland democratic congressman jamie raskin, congressman. thanks so much for being with us what s your reaction to the house vote to hold the attorney general in contempt in your mind? what helped could the audio recordings provide that the transcripts cannot well, it s a ridiculous motion in a ridiculous decision it s really the first time in american history that someone has been held in contempt by the us congress for complying with a subpoena from congress there s been overwhelming compliance in this case. what they were interested in was president biden s testimony before the special counsel the attorney general, the department justice, turned over the entire testimony verbatim, the entire transcript. they turned over all of the correspondence related did to it, and they even produce the special counsel himself, robert hur, who came over and spent several hours testifying and answering all questions about it. so they were saying they wanted to audio tape like they wanted the e-book. it wasn t enough to have the book itself. they wanted the audio book to go with it and everybody on capitol understands that they are looking for in president biden s more than five hours of testimony, which he gave during the time right after the terrorists to try cities on october 7 some verbal lapses, some mispronounced words or some ohms, or some us or something like that. and that s all for the purposes of creating a political tv attack ad. and everybody knows that that s what it s about. about and it s a ridiculous waste and abusive congressional resources and it was particularly rich as i think you said, and as i said on the house floor today, that this is coming from people who did not support contempt citations against people who really completely blew off congress and produced no documents and no testimony. people like steve bannon and some of those members who spoke on the floor on behalf of holding the attorney general united states in contempt themselves had never responded in any substantive way. to the subpoenas that were sent to them by the bipartisan january 6 select committee, which by the way, was found to be perfectly legitimate by multiple courts when our jurisdiction or authority was challenged in any way, let me play let me play what house speaker mike johnson had to say about that, specifically the idea of jim jordan who did not come comply with your subpoenas, you were on that committee. listen oh, i m so glad you brought up the january 6 committee. we ll be talking a lot more about that in the coming weeks. there s been a lot of investigation about that committee. i don t think it was properly constituted. i don t think it was it was properly administered. and now we know that apparently some of the evidence was hidden and some maybe even destroyed so you ll see, you ll hear much more about that in the days ahead. you talk about apples to oranges. there couldn t be a more clear contrast between that and what we re talking about here. do you see this is apples and oranges and respond if you d like to his charge that your committee was on lawfully constituted yeah, it s of course the exact opposite of what speaker johnson just said every federal court to look at this said that the january 6 select committee, which was a bipartisan committee with the democratic chair in a republican vice chair was completely lawfully constituted and lawfully operated and none of the people who tried to litigate against us, one in any way, they re just repeating a meeting, particularly the senate meeting? what does donald trump and the trump campaign hope to gain from it? they ve been pretty vague about the specifics of what they re hoping to talk about. it s been left sort of in broad strokes about policy the border medicare, social security. and i expect we will hear a lot about that. but i think this is mostly as one lawmaker put it to me about trump trying to garner enthusiasm the senators in particular, as you know, this is the first time he s going to be in a room with mitch mcconnell s since 2020 and the senate republicans, unlike house republicans, have been a group that have been not more resistant to him, but certainly less pliant in turn because of his demands. however, we have seen in the days since his conviction in manhattan is a pretty broad array of republicans, including senators, rallying around him and saying that this conviction tonight s improper or that democrats should be investigated or prosecutors should be prosecuted and i think this might be a different tone of meeting than we ve seen him have with senators for you know, congressman in 2017 when trump took office, the first time, there were some republican members of congress who went their own way are pushed back on some controversial statements or some policies that he had at the time are there any of them really left doo doo non trump republicans have any power and congress anymore well, one, i think this is going to be a great opportunity for president trump to be surrounded by republicans after felony convictions and show that he is still the leader of the party and is still generates a doozy asm. i think that there are some republicans who are running in biden districts, districts of president biden won in 2020, that will be concerned about being too close to president trump. and i think president trump understands that they have to win their races so while they won t push back verbally, they won t push back publicly they will certainly have some distance before they re election in november. so omega, as we said, mitt romney, lisa murkowski won t be there, i guess not for them specifically, but maybe others who haven t been fully in the trump camp. what outreach has there been from trump or the trump campaign? do they do the outreach thing they do actually do the outreach thing. they have people who worked in trump s world or close to trump s world, who do a lot of congressional relations. brian jack before he ran for congress himself, did a lot of that work. there are others who have taken over the political work there are people who work for trump directly, who have their own relationships. they do do outreach. but again, it s not always the kind of traditional political outreach we have experienced before. in the past are seen in the past. in some cases it is. i mean, one thing i will say about trump is he has been working the phones a lot himself. i mean, there are republicans who to have been shown over and over as these primaries took place, that trump is dominating and he s not going away and he is the presumptive nominee now and yes, there are some people who have races that it is more sensitive to be close to trump and they need some distance from him, but they recognize that he is potentially going to win the polling at the moment is showing him slightly ahead in a number of polls, not all of them, but in a number of them. and so there are cognizant of the fact that he is faring well and the message is clear to them that they may not want to be so at odds with the leader of their party. congressmen, as we mentioned, in addition to the congressional meetings, he s going to speak with ceos and business roundtable. i want to play you a portion of a speech he gave in new jersey and get your reaction i ll give you a trump middle-class, upper class, lower lower-class business-class, big tax cut you re going to have the biggest tax cut so big tax cuts across the board, including new business tax cuts, i guess on top of the 2017, 2018 tax cuts, is that even possible well, anything s possible it depends on who has majority of the house and who has a majority in the senate. if the republicans are in the majority of both and president trump wins reelection, then certainly something s possible. you only need a majority vote in the senate to pass a tax cut as we did the last tax cut, i m not sure what the appetite is going to be for a big tax cut. i think that he may want to play around the margins, but it ll be interesting to see if he can get a majority of republicans if there s especially if it s a small majority in either the senate or the house to go for a big tax. good. so in the senate, maggie, tomorrow you ve got jd vance tim, scott, marco rubio, and the house side, byron donalds. these are all people on the vp list, at least the ones that we know about how much auditioning do you think might be going on in public? but behind closed doors for everyone to see i don t think it s going to be that different than what we ve seen in public. john, i mean, what we ve seen in public is a number of these folks, not all of them, but a number of them show up at the manhattan courthouse where trump was on trial. we have seen them hold press conferences and denounce the charges against him. we have seen them defend him. i mean, i think there were few defenders that donald trump has on television anyway, who are as vocal as jd vance and i expect you will continue to see that. but the jockeying has been gone going on in private in public. i don t think it will be a massive change in private tomorrow. i do think you will see trump do what he often does, which is work the room talking, taking informal polls praising this one, praising that showing up to help in the contract fight does not translate into universal support. donald trump still has a lot of blue collar appeal 30 years at the same job means you develop a routine. so when the s work, not physical work. like you re doing a plant. he has a solid gold toilet at home so how can he really empathize with your life and when you say wait, joe biden walked a picket line with us. michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, donald trump won them and the rest of course, was history. so let s come back to 2020 with that map up there and take a look. the union vote was a big part of it. let me stretch this out for you. forgive me for turning my back, but just to stretch it out so you can see a little bit bigger. hillary clinton won, but with just 53% to 40% for trump in 20169 points better joe biden gets 62% in 2020, part of his coalition that helped him win in michigan. now, look, trump only went down to 37 percent, so it s not just a groundswell of union votes for biden, hillary clinton lost a bunch of those blue color votes to third party candidates. that s one of the big questions a can president biden keep that number, keep a close to 60% in 2020? or remember, tonight, each of their names was called out in remembrance, and two of the graduate spoke with our randy k on the eve of their graduation super excited about heading to college. it s definitely a very bittersweet kind of emotion bittersweet because grace fischer is graduating newtown high school without 20 of her classmates, they were killed in the massacre at sandy hook elementary, nearly 12 years ago emma ehrens was there that horrible day two and lost her best friend thinking about all the what-ifs of what if they were sitting next to me at graduation, what if we were still friends? where would we be? both emma and grace, we re just 6-years-old in 2012 and seated in there first grade classrooms when the gunmen stormed into their school, we thought it was construction because it s been going on for the past couple of days on the roof and then a guy armed came into my classroom and started shooting all of my friends and my teachers and my classmates, his gun and had been jammed and of friend of mine, jesse lewis had yelled at us to run and that s what we did. we sectioned ourselves into the cubby area, which is kind of like an indent. so from the door were absolutely hidden. i remember feeling like i was endangered emma remembers bumping into the gunman in her rush to get out. the boy who yelled to her and others to run jesse lewis was fatally shot on the spot. when you believe he saved your life? i do. i really in the hallway right by the main entrance, there was chairs in front of the office and under the chairs were people because because of the force of impact of the bullets, they were blown under the chairs when we got to the firehouse, we had to line up by grade. and that s when my teacher was really like, this is really not ok. because when we lined up by grade, half, our grade was missing and everyone else was there in the year since both girls have struggled to cope with the memories from that day, i ve gone to therapy for like six or seven years i have survivor s guilt, ptsd. it definitely still like a lot of fear in me. and even now, i don t think i ve been to a single column concert and my entire life just because i m really worried about that big crowd of people and not knowing where to go in case of an emergency. they ve turned some of that anxiety into action. i want to live in a nation that values children more than guns both are members of the junior newtown action alliance, which promotes gun safety. i do not want future kids of america to have to be spared in the classroom. we really are pushing obviously for a federal assault weapons ban ball. so we do shift our focus to safe storage laws and also mental health resources. they ve met with members of congress about gun laws. and just last week, vice president kamala harris. and yet school shootings continue. it s definitely like a knife to the heart when you see it happen again and again after fighting so hard on graduation de the names of those lost were red and ribbons marking the day of the massacre worn in there, honor, because their lives were lost so early and i went through that such an early age. i feel like it s my purpose to continue my life in honor of them i know whatever i do, they will be proud of me. i like to believe that on the most recent anniversary of the shooting, emma posted this photo on her instagram writing in part. i just want to live in a safe world. i miss you guys every day. i hope you are happy in heaven. the picture shows emma with her best friend avl richmond, who died in the shooting i hope you are happy and evan and ready. k is with us now. what strength they all showed there. what are the plans for after graduation? they have plans for college. this fall i m is going to go to roger williams university and she plans to study legal studies and grow race is going to hamilton college and she plans to focus on law and justice. they both really wanted to help people, but my guess is john, that even though they re going away to college, that new town isn t going to be very far from their thoughts. even emma told me during our interview that she still runs this five key and honor of her teacher who was killed the news broke yesterday, donald trump s staunch supporters for right media personalities still maintain justice was not served. donald trump junior even suggesting that the case was done in order to media. what is going on here? we saw sort of two themes really emerged. one was this was a case finally of justice served a lot of praise for the judge who was a trump appointee. but then there was and i think it goes against the elc of who we are as americans and our faith in the criminal justice system this will be very difficult to get a reverse alon. it was handled by judge noriega, who is an experienced judge who didn t play any games. she was as fair to the defense as she was to the prosecution so quite a different sort of tone there over the exact same verdict from a jury of their peers. but then you go into further into the right-wing media sphere and you get something else, you get what they say is essentially a larger conspiracy theory, even though this was a guilty verdict. here is right-wing talk show host early kirk in a tweet, he says, hunter biden, guilty. jan, the true crimes of the biden crime family remain untouched. this is a fake trial trying to make the justice system appear balanced, don t fall for it. this is also something that donald trump campaign tout. it s pushing the conspiracy theory that president biden has taken money from foreign governments and that this whole trial was just to try to cover up for it, tried to give something to take away from what they say is a larger, unfounded conspiracy theory in this sunday of that donald trump junior also spouting in a live conversation on x saying it s not even close to justice, saying it s trying to create the illusion of equal justice under the law. and this goes to show you how the far fringes of the protein trump media world. they have drifted into just sort of automatic conspiracy theories that the default is a conspiracy theory when the do s does not justify their point of view that had, i got to match them just noticeably more quiet than it would ve been two weeks ago after the conviction, new york. and so look, both sides are going to play the politics it s the way they feel they need to on this. clearly the trump campaign s going to try to highlight the inadequacy they felt in their case and downplay what happened yesterday, the same way you re hearing pretty much silence outside of a pretty basic statement out from the white house yesterday about hunter biden s conviction yesterday here s the truth of it. all this race between donald trump and joe biden right now. so static that both of these have had relatively little impact on the actual results of any poll right now, this election at the end of the de is gonna be decided by a very, very, very narrow set of swing voters. and those swing voters are likely going to say the talks and all their houses, they ve already disapproval, both candidates, this just adds to that fire are going to ultimately vote on what they believe is in the best interests for them and their families in november. and i think the first campaign to recognize that and grab onto that is likely going to be the candidate that wins in november i will say the reaction for most democrats has been respect the rule of law and to the trump verdict, it was respect the rule of law. and with republicans, the response to the trump verdict was outraged and the response to that hunter biden verdict is conspiracy. there is a vast difference here in those reactions. i do want to ask you, chuck joe crowley, if former congressman from new york, it as far as making a statement, democrats saying the quiet part out loud says, quote, it s the silver lining. they weren t looking for maybe suggesting in some ways this helps president biden in his reelection i think that it s distinguishable because the younger biden is not the president. and so what you get to see is joe biden be a caring father for a son who had a substance abuse program who was in one of those who i think gets sympathy, people always run to their corners on the right or the left and that tried a small group of folks would decide the outcome. but when you can personalize the president, whose demagogue on the right all the time because of his age or anything else they can find and he can become more human as a political consultant who runs campaigns every single day those are the little moments i m looking for when a president can be more human and not just this thing that we see on the news all day long or i want to get your reaction to something that paul i think we have the paul ryan sound all so do we have paul ryan talking on fox? we don t have paul ryan. well, paul ryan, the former speaker of the house, went on fox news, matt yesterday and said the types of things that paul ryan has really said, frankly, since 2020, he said that donald trump isn t fit to be president. and he said it right on fox news for many conservative viewers to hear this upset i should say, supporters of donald trump, including congressmen troy nehls, listen to what he said paul ryan, you re a piece of garbage. you re a piece of garbage. and we should kick you out of the party for paul ryan to say he s not vote for donald trump. that s the problem with some of our republicans. its guys like that. don t go spout in your mouth often, same euro conservative. your spit in the face of the leader of our party, donald trump. i m grow up a little bit doesn t really sound like big ten. they re mad no. i mean, look, if you you mentioned that this foot paul ryan been saying since 2020, that s been made, been saying it publicly since 2020, but it s essentially what he s been saying even privately since 2016. and there s been a literal books written on on that, so i don t think this really comes as much of a surprise to anyone. there are certainly going to be a sliver of the party which is going to say they re knocking support donald trump as the nominee. and what s going to be interesting by nicely looking at polling every single day what i m looking for is, which can t is going to be able to hold onto the larger share of their own party, going november, it s amazing, despite talks like this, despite discussions at division and the republican party, despite high profile republicans saying they want support doctrine, he still maintains actually much stronger course of work from registered republican voters than joe biden does from democratic voters. and that just gets the core of one, the bigger political challenges for the white house right now now is that it s upwards of over 20% of their core based right now, it s saying they may not support joe biden or donald trump is holding almost anywhere between 85 to 90% of his own party right now. so despite paul ryan basically saying ways been saying for almost a decade now, not much has changed that i ll trump s still as of today as a stronger fold on the republic welcome party than joe biden does on the democratic party. and that s why you re seeing in the head impulse right now? yeah. chuck, what about matt s point there? paul ryan saying what he says, who does that actually convince well i would push back on that just a little bit. we ve had elections last night in ohio and every tuesday we ve had an election and all these states were republican primary motors got to pick on who they wanted and about 80% have picked trump to his point but 20% of pick nikki haley, who ain t even running for president no more. so i wouldn t say he s got that consolidated. we got our own problems with democrats but our base is pretty secure with joe biden s one has been getting about 90 or 95% and what do you see for paul ryan represents a lot of common sense economic driven republicans in the suburb who were sick and tired. of donald trump. there was a primary internationally, a special election in ohio yesterday, ohio s sixth congressional district in a district any trump won by like 29 points where the heavily finance republican candidate, one. but by around ten points or even a little bit less, any source of concern there, matt no. i mean, look, yeah, you re seeing a bit of a juxtaposition compared to special elections almost ten years ago, republicans traditionally have had habitual voters on their side, older voters, voters with college degrees. lately, those are two groups have been shifting to democratic party while the republican party is doing much better with voters without college degrees and even younger voters who are much harder to turn out in a special election scenario like we saw in ohio yesterday. i think you re going to see likely a republican carry that district again by 20 plus points in the november general election. it is an interesting dichotomy though you go back just a few cycles ago. chuck and i probably on opposite pages about looking at these special election results. it is the scenario right now we re republicans are doing better in presidential elections because they re pulling out different voters who may not show up outside of the big, the big show every four years. now, there is really something happening interesting in the special luncheon with the high and low propensity voters there. thanks for pointing it out that mauer is great to see you chuck wrote that culture as to prevent the conflict from, further escalating and spreading to other places is to get ceasefire that allows us to get to work toward a more durable end to the conflict here again qatar has been tireless partner in the prime minister personally, a tireless partner in working to mediate a ceasefire and a hostage release something that the prime minister and i first discussed here on october 13th and many times since 12 days ago president biden s set out a ceasefire proposal rooted in core principles of releasing all the hostages surging assistance into gaza guaranteeing israel security providing a path to an enduring and to war. and starting the massive reconstruction for gaza the entire world almost without fail has been behind this proposal and we heard it again and again and again. individual countries pronouncing themselves in support in this region and beyond. important groups like the g7, the honorably palestinian authority israel and of course just two days ago, the united nations security council leaders in the region that i ve met with over the last couple of days they have reaffirmed that. again and again and again so we re waiting on one response and that was the response it s from hamas and as the prime minister said, last night, we received a response hamas has proposed numerous changes to the posel that was on the table. we discussed those changes last night with a different colleagues and today with the prime minister some of the changes are workable. some are not here in a nutshell is where we stand a deal was on the table that was virtually identical to proposal that hamas before on may the sixth a deal that the entire world is behind a deal israel is accepted hamas could have answered with a single word yes instead hamas weighted nearly two weeks and then propose more changes a number of which go beyond positions that had previously taken an accepted as a result, you heard the prime minister say this the war that hamas started on october 7. but this barbaric attack on israel and on israeli civilians we ll go on more people will suffer. palestinians will suffer more, israelis will suffer but in the days ahead we are going to continue to push on an urgent basis with our partners with qatar with egypt to try to close this deal. because we know it s in the interests of israelis, palestinians. the region indeed, the entire world and we all three that the deal has to be grounded in the principles at the ceasefire proposal that the entire international community supports there s something nelson s critical and the prime minister alluded to it it s also crucial that we get from the immediate ceasefire that we re working personally to achieve to an enduring end and in order to do that and to do that effectively we have to have plans for the day after the conflict ganzen, gaza, and we need to have them as soon as possible for months. we ve been working with partners throughout the region on such a plan and that was also key focus conversations i ve had over the last couple of days in the coming weeks, we will put forward proposals for key elements of the day after plan, including concrete ideas for how to manage governance security reconstruction that plan is key to turning a ceasefire into an enduring end to the conflict. but also turning an end of war into a just and durable peace. and using that he s using that piece as a foundation for building a more integrated more stable more prosperous region over the course of but what s now my eighth visit to the region since october 7 everyone that i ve engaged with has made clear that this is the path they want to pursue. now i can t speak for hamas or answer for hamas and ultimately, it may not be the path that hamas wants to pursue. but hamas cannot and will not be allowed to decide the future for this region that s people enough dialogue and majorly less. so i lower zero on had known have numbering connected jazeera what we ve just been listening to is secretary of state tony blinken can he in doha and these are his first remarks. first real response since they have received the response from hamas to the hostage and ceasefire proposal has now better than we saw at the month prior. it is also better than expectations. so we like to see that when you look at cpi on a monthly basis, this is where the real good news cause this is where the gift is 0% remaining unchanged on a monthly basis, right? so the index pretty much remaining flat. the last it s how we saw this, you d have to go all the way back to july, i think of 2022. so you certainly like to see that. i want to talk really quickly about sectors on a monthly basis because this gives you a sense of where prices are still rising and where they re falling. so shelter which has been really stubborn shelter, you think the price to put a roof over your head, think about rent. you think about there s a component for mortgages. so that increased again on a monthly basis and food slightly increased. but as you can see on this graphic here, just so slightly on the other hand, we saw prices fall for gas in a pretty big way. we saw prices fall for apparel as well, and airline fares also came down. so the reason why this is really important in general, but certainly on a day like today when we re getting hit with a double whammy effect of economic event is it just gives us a sense, not just of where prices have been, but also where rates are going. and when we hear from jay powell, the federal reserve chairman, and about six hours from now, we don t expect this softer inflation report to necessarily change what we hear from him, then we re not expecting a rate cut. this meeting, but perhaps now that we re getting more welcoming inflation data, maybe that means a rate cut. maybe later this summer, maybe early this fall, which after the string of inflation reports that we have been getting, that we re actually hotter than expected that was even a big question. so for change, i come with some are better than expected news, inflation cooling for the month of may, we ll wait a few hours to hear what j power has to say about this. i m sure he will when you re looking at the symptoms of heat sickness, you re looking at maybe dizziness, headaches, some cool and pale skin. is that could be a sign of heat exhaustion. you want to watch out for that if it gets worse, you could even be working at unconsciousness and confusion for symptoms of heat stroke. so these are things that we need to watch out for. again we ve had this extreme pete pretty early in the season. so you ll want to make sure that you re looking at exercising either early or late to avoid that pq, you wanna wear lightweight, light-colored closed drink lots of water. remember to check on children, elderly and pads, and remember that these cards could get incredibly hot. it only takes minutes for these cars two get to a level that can be deadly. now, heat is the biggest there will be a debate something that will be monitoring throughout day. but what we know is almost 47,000 churches are linked to this association. on top of that, women working in pastoral roles at about 100 churches. and this could affect black church across the country. but one of the things that people want to talk about is the fact that supporters believe this is biblically necessary. listened to to pastors talk about this breakdown and why this vote could go one way today women have had a prominent role within the ministry and pastoral positions within the leadership of first alexandria for over 44 years first alexandria stands before you today as a testament that we can maintain a fruitful partnership with churches. the take a different stance on women and ministry we find no joy in making this recommendation, but have formed the opinion that the churches egalitarian beliefs regarding the office of pastor do not closely identify what the conventions adopted it will move forward, especially in this changing, changing landscape across the country when it comes to people going to church. but this debate will happen today. the vote should happen later on, church in texas. reverend, thanks for being here and just to bring everyone up to speed, your congregation is an autonomous baptist church, not affiliated with a southern baptist convention but your experience is so important here because this is not the first time a church has been ejected from the southern baptist convention over female pastors why do you think they are doubling down on this? yeah that s right. thanks for having me i think one of the reasons why they re doubling down on this is because they re trying to maintain power. i mean, studies show that to maintain power, you have to constantly exert power. i think they re doing this in an effort to exert power. the irony is the southern baptist convention is losing power because it s losing influence. a decision like this will inevitably lead to the disfellowship of hundreds of churches, which means the convention will significantly dwindle and size rafat, this feels very strange to ask, but i shall, which is have you ever witnessed any negative impacts? of having a female pastor in a church yeah. i actually grew up in the southern baptist convention, which is funny that you should ask that. and as i, as you mentioned earlier, royal lane is not part of the southern baptist convention, but we were in fact we left the convention in the early 90s because of their discrimination of women and ministry. so in many ways what we re seeing is not new. the convention has a long history of excluding women administrate, especially from leadership roles. i think the point i was trying to make have you ever seen having a female pastor leader church and a senior role that it s been a problem for a church in terms of actual spiritual faith and leading a congregation for separate from its connection to the, to the convention sure. thanks for that clarification. no. i haven t seen that. i mean, i think our church in particular has seen a lot of fruitful ministry from the result of having a female and a pulpit. it s also helpful to just expand the number of voices that we hear from. so to. choose to only reserve the office of pastor for men is to limit ministry and limit the possibilities of what god can do the reverend, we heard the reverend of the man who is leading the alexandria church. his name s robert stevens speaking there saying this is a sad moment for us. but we also recognize that god has a future for first baptist church. and i had read, used speaking to, i believe as a local community newspaper earlier this year and talking about women women in clergy and the impact and you say often i tell people, you can t be what you can t see what does this movement from egalitarian beliefs mean for young kids growing up in the southern baptist churches all over the country right now yeah. i can t help but think about all those young girls in these churches who will never know what s possible for them. because as you said, you can t be what you can t see. so it s disheartening to think about the ways in which we re limiting their imaginations but i actually remain hopeful because if my religious experience tells me anything it s that god is bigger than the walls we tried to put around god. so i m confident this won t be the last word for women in baptist life i wanted to ask you if you could speak with the clergy of the first baptist church in alexandria today, what would your message be? reverend yeah, i would tell them to keep going to be courageous in their prophetic witness and to remember that there are many examples of women and leadership throughout the bible of a southern baptist just convention likes to hold that the office of pastor is reserved for men alone. and at that somehow is qualified by scripture. but that s just not true. we see women in leadership roles across the bible as they serve as judges, prophets, apostles, the first witnesses to the resurrection were women. so we wouldn t even have a church today if it weren t for women. so i would tell them to press on to keep going and to remember that if the son of god can come from the womb of a woman, then surely the word of god can come from her mouth now that is a perfect note to end on a that is all the time we have this weekend. we will see you tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. eastern for more morning joe. until then, enjoy the rest of your sunday. your sunday. good morning. it s sunday, june 9. i m alicia menendez. with michael steele and symone sanders townsend. we are following president biden on his final day in france and the appearance of his message of american leadership for folks abroad and at home. donald trump and his allies will payback was guilty verdict. however deranged that may sound . how congressional republicans want to use their power to punish. what could happen this week as trump pushes to be unleashed from his gag order. grab your coffee and settle in. welcome to the weekend. president biden is wrapping up his consequential visit to europe this morning in the next hour, he is expected to visit american military cemetery near paris. this caps a week of ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the allied invasion of normandy. the president used the stage to call for citizens to demand of accuracy cash against authoritarianism worldwide. we stand at an inflection point in history. the decisions we make now will determine the course of our future for decades to come. we have a lot of opportunity and a lot of responsibility. it gives me hope to know the france and the united states stand together now and always. me we continue to see democracy, may we in both languages, no we stand together. joining us is professor of history and author of strongmen , miscellany to the present, ruth ben-ghiat. presidential historian professor of history douglas brinkley. good morning. ruth, i want to start with you. i thought this week was incredibly important. a definition all week if you will. both on the global stage and here at home for president biden. he really connected a number of dots about the urgency and the washington post wrote a piece which i thought he talked will americans recognize their country in the dark and desperate portrait trump painted? or is the country s falling to pieces, he said. if he is not return to power, the countries finish. you want to be country anymore. or will americans instead choose to see a nation still striving to fulfill the higher purpose than biden described in memory of those who fought here, died here, literally save the world here, let us be worthy of their sacrifice. that, to me, was a consummating moment. i would love to get your take on how the president has framed his visit around this idea of, there is a bigger fight out there. those who come before have engaged in it and now it s up to us to engage as well on behalf of democracy. i think it s been extremely effective to frame this not only because the reason he is there is commemorating an important victory over fascism in world war ii, but it reminds us of the toll that bad leadership can have. not just on one s own country but on the world. when you have district to vengeful leaders with large armies, as you did with mussolini, hitler, and today with putin, he see the world is not safer. trump is trying to his tell us that the world may be safer because he is allied with people like putin but that s not the case and history is clear on that. i want to agree with michael that this week was in his word definition. when we were listening to president biden brought that he was expressing the urgency of this moment that we find ourselves in but with an i toward history. they were flourishes where he would say, how will we be remembered? how will this moment be remembered in 10, 20, 30 years. do you agree that this week was definitional and when scholars of history look back , how will this be remembered? on the short-term, it was a big win for joe biden. he went dess the famous spot where ronald reagan gave one of his famous speeches, and pulled up a very important speech, warning us about the need for democracy and the need to fight for freedom. reminding us that authoritarianism is on the loose yet again. really going after, going after people that are xena phobic, right-wing populist movement blooming in europe right now. i did come across as representing america as a statesman and promoting nato and protecting the ukraine and trying to create a stronger bulwark against putin s russia who is on a terror right now. to follow up on that point. i believe it was cass mood who wrote populism is a thick ideology mixed with faith and ideology. this right-wing populism on the rise in europe, populism doesn t have to be bad, but like bernie sanders is an economic populist. this idea that this dirty populism is the thing that s taking hold of places not just across europe but a sentiment like that at home. how does that dovetail with what we know to be true about our history? you see the republican party of today going back to the 1930s and embracing an isolationist plank. they are the henry ford s and charles lindbergh s of today. this is a fringe movement but isolationism over the decades has had its adherence. what is worrying about it is this friendship that trump has maintained with putin. he acts like he is putin s puppet is hillary clinton famously put it. he asked that way and with any authoritarian leader, if you chisel away at what donald trump is arguing, he sees a world of five big powers with five important authoritarian/in his case, democratic leader. we don t do business that way in the united states. trump is standing out as a loan silo because all the other presidents, ronald reagan was in the news because the spot biden chose to give his commemorative speech. reagan s is part of the other presidents club. ronald reagan but want to make sure we defended ukraine. that speech reagan gave in 1984 was about liberating eastern europe, getting the berlin wall to come down and breaking up the soviet union. american democracy on offensive posture and trump s an agent of fear. he is fear mongering the way he away long dated her father conklin. joe mccarthy famously. what is different is we had those tenets before of fear mongering but they never went all the way to somebody being able to take over the party of abraham blinken and also, with the specter of january 6 has happened in this millions of americans seem to shrug off january 6 is not a big deal, to me it s frightening. it tells you how deeply rooted social media has made right- wing extremism a disease across our land right now. give then everything we know and certainly that we have learned from history and historians like douglas, how did we get here? how do people move themselves into this space? the reason i ask, i am going to play the new ad from the biden campaign which lays out some of the more infamous quotes of donald trump and military service for example. he handed me his purple heart. i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. does donald trump even understand why someone is given a purple heart? why you receive the purple heart in the first place? here we are in this moment where people are looking past the man s attack on the military. his attack on institutions. his attack on the constitution. what to use senses going on that s animating this and allowing it to continue the way it has? i am glad the biden campaign made that at. it s very moving because it speaks to dess it gets to the heart of the fact that authoritarians are nihilist. they have no ideals beyond money and power. anybody who would do something like serve their country knowing they may be injured or killed, that makes them losers and dupes which are the suckers which are the words donald trump uses about our own people who serve. he mocks people who serve such as nikki haley s husband. in keeping with authoritarians throughout history because they despise the people think, quote, govern. they only want to dominate them, exploit them. this is why i go back to character and leadership and having somebody like donald trump lead our country, we deserve better. it s an incredible moment, douglas, to be living in, and i think about president biden on the world stage yesterday we were on air and prepared to talk about his trip to europe. in the interim, there was the hostage rescue out of gaza. i want you to listen to what the president had to say. i want to echo president macron s comments welcoming the hostages return to their families in israel. we won t stop working until all hostages come home and a cease- fire is reached. that is essential to happen. so often when i see these moments in the world s stage i m reminded of the argument that president biden made when he was running for president four years ago which is, we need someone from day one is ready to hit the ground running who understands challenges at home and challenges abroad. he really foreshadowed the years that would come in terms of the marriott crises they have developed in real time. when i was watching president biden these last few days, i m reminded of his greatness. often, we dismiss something that he says he seems to be an opportunity. there is this steady evenness, even low-key on this which may not make him kinetic on the campaign trail but it makes you feel saying that he is a states person. that he understands protocol. that he understands how important the u.s./french relationship is. he can talk about lafayette with president mccrone and understand the hours story the american revolution of two today with france. he has been there. he has done that. he has seen a lot. he was visibly moved at normandy when he went to the forest of crosses and stars of david and walked across. you can feel how emotional this was. biden had been born in world war ii, 1941, probably our last president that would be a world war ii president. he reminded us of the power of nato. this has been the essential alliance since 1945, 48 with harry truman, all the way up to now and there s only been one anti-nato president and that s donald trump. nato, the atlantic alliance is seminal for keeping our military , economic policies, and democracy, and culture even alive and well. i ve been deeply disturbed the weight trump pushed aside nato might as well just blow away the european union. it s refreshing to watch biden and know he has that long institutional memory and understands what containment of soviet expansion means back in the days. especially given everything that s going on. i will ask you to stick with us because we need to talk about the rest of the far right. it s not just in america. new details about the role american intelligence played in the israeli mission that rescued four hostages. rescued . auntie, you can t put that right in the dishwasher. watch me. with cascade platinum plus i have upped my dish game. i just scrape. load. and i m done. in that dishwasher? help people understand the importance of not leaning into this and this does not end well for anybody. we are lucky that southern poverty law center in alabama is continuing to monitor these hate crimes. that bit of luck turns to horror when we start watching the spikes in anti- semitism, spikes and anti- mexican rhetoric, and type black, anti-lgbtq+. the right wants to destroy the fabric of a multicultural america. as we are speaking in san diego, catholic charities, i am a check let a catholic. one of my favorite people is pope francis by catholic charity workers are being attacked and disrupted by handing out food and water to children that have come over the border in southern california. we are looking at authoritarian coming our way. when have we seen this before? we haven t. black america has. black america has had lynchings. we have things like the springfield race riot of 1908 or the race riot of 1921. we have had the institutionalization of jim crow and saw what did in decimating black americans. we have seen what this can do to indigenous people where their rights are stripped away and they are seen as something other. there is a real white supremacy movement alive across the land led by donald trump. at their core, the were fearful of this browning of america and this is seen as the last big stan to reclaim america as a white predominately white country. that anti-immigrant, anti- person of color rhetoric that is coming out of this right is ghastly. it represents the ugly part of our country. trump used to praise fdr for one thing, all the great things franklin d roosevelt, but the one trump talks about, was in a gray 20 put japanese in internment camps in world war ii? he would praise eisenhower, ike did many good things, two terms, but trump praises operation with back, bringing workers, agricultural workers and shipping them out of the united states back to mexico. this is the kind of movement we are dealing with. it is frightening. we have not seen something like this coalesce since the confederate movement before the civil war. it had spirits, mccarthyism was a big deal but fellow republican dwight eisenhower along with the u.s. army were able to chop mccarthy off at the knees. there is nobody out there to stop or slow donald trump down and it s going to be up to joe biden and kamala harris to talk about optimism and the economy and talk about better days are here to come. talk about the virtues of democracy and don t result of fear mongering that trump is doing to mobilize his base and beyond. ruth, we will give you the last word, but i m thinking the fact that the european parliament elections are enfolding this week, and we talked the radical right is on the rise in the juxtaposition between was happening at home and across europe and political wrote this week that the radical right arrival in the european stage will have a lasting impact. allegiance sees allegiances formed in early adulthood tend to last lifetimes unlike in the u.s. were support for trump is concentrated among the elderly. the insurgents have captured the youth vote in europe, likely lacking and support for decades. nowhere is it more clear that in the national rally party as it relates to what s happening in france. a 28-year-old later. what say you about this rise of the radical right, this dirty populism amongst young people? reporter: even as israel is celebrating the success of yesterday s hostage rescue, they are bracing for a significant political development in a couple of hours time. 1:00 p.m. eastern we are expecting benny gantz, the centrist opposition leader who joins benjamin netanyahu s wartime government to hold a press conference and we believe he will announce that he is resigning from netanyahu s government. let s be clear, assuming that s what happens, what that does and does not mean. it does not mean the fall of netanyahu s government but it would mean that the far right inside of that government, the same far right that is deeply opposed to the cease-fire plan laid out by prime minister by president biden rather last week would be empowered. you would not have that centrist more moderate element inside of the government to counterbalance the power of the far right. that is potentially a significant move. we were expecting benny gantz to hold this press conference yesterday, but he delayed it in light of the hostage rescue. going back to the four hostages. all are in good condition according to the israeli military. they spent their first night being treated at a hospital here in the greater tel aviv area. we had a chance yesterday to catch up with some of the friends of noa argamani, the young woman who was kidnapped on october 7 from the music festival, taken on a motorcycle into gaza. the friends of hers who we have been speaking to for eight months have just seen her for the first time. take a listen. how are you feeling? ( ) [thud] president biden, i think, has been serious about courting independence, even right- leaning independents and anti- trump republicans. the campaign hired a national republican engagement director who before this role was cheapest after former republican congressman adam kinzinger. this comes as outside groups are boosting outreach to these voters, republican voters against trump launched a six- figure billboard campaign and four swing states featuring republicans who refused to cast a ballot for the ex-president. joining us is senior spokesperson for the biden/harris campaign kevin munoz. it s good to see you. it s interesting and politically exciting to see the biden campaign engage the way it is starting to push up against a lot of the narratives . we were talking earlier about the biden ads that are taking trump s words and putting them out there and saying he said this. it did not make it up. you have this pivot politically on the ground where you are bringing on republicans who can help and weatherford out of the adam kinzinger for environment. how do you think the shapes of narratively for the biden campaign. what are you saying to republicans, i know many of them, waiting for that invitation to the conversation. they want to see it come correct. they want it to come in a way that s meaningful, to reaffirm the coalition, if you will, that biden needs to win. let s look at the opportunity. 4.5 million republican primary voters have voted against donald trump this year. these are voters that didn t have to vote in a primary. donald trump is clearly the front runner, but they want to show they had not gotten donald trump does not have their support and they want somebody that stands for the rule of law, stands for democracy, stands for fighting for america on the global stage. these are voters that need to hear from the campaign and we need to earn their votes. we been running these ads and targeting these voters in battleground states amber brought on austin, he has two decades of history. we got to focus on building a bunch of trust to republicans willing to speak up and talk to fellow republicans and say you can support president biden. we think we have a good message not just because we are not donald trump but because joe biden has a proven history of getting things done, working across the aisle. look at the bipartisan plan that trump killed. we will talk about those issues. let s talk about the border you have progressives angry over the present eye latest executive action on asylum specific. listen to what this representative had to say yesterday. republicans have covered up for every failure there s by pointing to some vulnerable group of people. i think they ve been setting up this trap that unfortunately president biden has been pushed into with this executive order. do you agree with that that the president has been pushed into a trap by republicans. help me understand the political calculus. what you lose in the we have energy and support from progressives. where are you gaining it back? let s take a step back. on day one of this administration, joe biden brought forth a comprehensive immigration plan republicans have failed. they used the border as a talking point and refuse to work with those. even despite that, joe biden was able to negotiate a bipartisan border plan that would ve provided long-overdue resources to help secure the border, provide more resources for immigration courts, help expedite green cards for a lot of people that need more pathways to citizenship and what happened? donald trump killed it not once but twice. we are in this position where we were forced to take executive action that helps address what we can and cannot do with very limited resources and we have to be honest about that. that does not mean the fight for comprehensive immigration reform is over. you heard biden talk about it earlier that the fight is far from over but we have to be honest. the american people demand action when it comes to a broken immigration system. overwhelming americans support the action and comprehensive immigration reform and we have to remind voters that we have to work for the. i want to as quickly as a follow-up. a lot of reporting about the possibility of the administration considering ways in which they could address challenges in immigration on the interior including parole in place of american citizens. is this something we could see as soon as this coming week? i can t get ahead of policy announcement but you heard the president earlier, the fight for comprehensive immigration reform, dressier pathways to citizenship, especially for people who have been here a long time is critical. the american people do not like chaos. they don t want chaos at the border or in their communities. we have to continue that fight and we have to remind the american people of what donald trump is running. he wants to round up latinos and immigrants across the country. max detention camps. we have to do both. and the time we have left, a lot of times when folks talk about engaging we talk about the need for the biden campaign to engage republicans because as part of his coalition. moderate republican voters and independents. we talk about the need to gin up the base as well and treat base voters, young people, women, black and latino voters, what is the message when it comes to the economy for black and latino voters, young people . when i am talking to people, one of the chief concerns as economic. housing. the rent is too high all over. gut bless you if you want to buy a house and you were not rich. which your message to folks, here which is a about the border, trump scene phobic. what about the economy? we have to tell a story to the american people about who is fighting for them and fighting to make their lives better. it s not just the economy who is taking action to address corporate greed? action to address junk fees?
