Survey: Social minister Tanel Kiik most trusted politician in Estonia


Estonian residents trust Minister of Social Affairs Tanel Kiik (Center) most of any politician, followed by MEP Marina Kaljurand (SDE) and President Kersti Kaljulaid, a survey conducted by pollster Kantar Emor shows.
According to the politician trust survey, Kiik is trusted by 49 percent of all Estonian residents with 61 percent of Estonians saying they trust the social minister. Kiik s trust is highest among those aged 65 and up.
Kantar Emor leading expert Aivar Voog said: Kiik as social minister is a politician who has gotten extensive media coverage. Despite his young age, his balanced and calming style fits well into the current crisis situation and has reached the top of the politician trust survey. ....

ERR News looks back at 2020 which was, if nothing else, an eventful year.
As no one needs reminding, 2020 was dominated by the coronavirus pandemic and its knock-on effects on everyday life and the economy, several EKRE-led scandals and the upcoming marriage referendum.
But other, more positive events also occurred, such as Estonia taking up its first non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The ERR News team has looked back over the top stories of 2020.
January
The year started with Estonia formally commencing its two-year stint as a non-permanent member on the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Estonia had been awarded the post in June the previous year, and joined Niger, Tunisia, Vietnam and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as non-permanent members for 2020-2021. ....

Lack of specialists leaves more than 8,400 children without study support


On Monday, the Riigkogu s state budget control committee discussed a recently conducted National Audit Office (Riigikontroll) audit that showed nearly a quarter of Estonian school children and a third of kindergarteners do not have sufficient access to study support measures.
The National Audit Office found that there are more than 8,400 children in Estonia who are left with less support or without sufficient assistance whatsoever, ETV s daily affairs show Aktuaalne kaamera reported.
Jürgen Ligi (Reform), head of the Riigikogu s select committee on state budget control, said the problem is self-inflicted: We have brought this problem on ourselves by implementing inclusive education 10 years ago. That students would study to the brink in regular schools and from that situation a need to help some of them arose. ....
