we have updates in the other special counsel s investigation. jack smith issuing more subpoenas in the january 6th investigation. this time, focusing on arizona. so let s get to it. joining me now is nbc news investigative correspondent, tom winter and nbc news justice reporter, ryan reilly. let s start with the top. walt nauta, finally getting a lawyer. finally pleading not guilty. walk us through what happened. it was a short hearing. the big news is he did get this lawyer, and essentially one of the reasons i think it s more difficult to find someone is because, you know, donald trump hasn t been known to pay his bills. that s something you re on the hook for down the line if, you know, no matter where this goes, once you re on the case you re stuck with it no matter what, even if there s a dispute about payment or what have you. whoever signed on for that is in for the long haul. with donald trump, a significant retainer agreement, cash up front in order to take on that

[inaudible] why do you ask such dumb question? jesse: it s actually great question. it s a question every single reporter should be asking. because, before we even knew joe biden was the big guy, before we even had the laptop a ukrainian businessman told an fbi informant that he bribed the big guy 5 million bucks. he used the phrase the big guy when joe was v.p., years before the nickname went public. and tonight we are learning the big guy was throwing his weight around. this alleged $5 million bribe wasn t so much of a bribe. it was more of a shakedown by the big guy, joe biden. he was shaking down the ukrainian. the federalist is reporting that biden coerced the ukrainian to pay the bribe. the big guy was strong arming a ukrainian energy company to wire him cash. the ukrainian told the fbi informant he hid the payments, never directly paid joe, just hid it in a maize of shell companies and said it would take at least 10 years to follow the money back to biden. well, it
stretched for five years. and the source told the fbi about these conversations in june 2020. that s right as joe biden was wrapping up the democrat nomination. the burisma executive told the fbi s confidential source that burisma had to pay the biden administration for help getting rid of the ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating burisma for corruption. quote: 5 million for one biden, 5 million for the other biden, the burisma executive told the confidential human source. now, people who have seen the document tell us that the $5 million payments were a kind of retainer agreement that burisma had with the biden administration do deal with a number of issues. one of which was getting rid of this prosecutor. other issues burisma needed biden s help with was help with oil deals. now, the executives said they needed to pay joe biden because hunter was quote, unquote, dumb and couldn t get much done by himself. now, people who have seen this document say it looks like a pay
