Rio Grande River Water Usage Accountability Heats Up

A conservation group which has fought to know how water from the Rio Grande is being used by a regional irrigation district in New Mexico will continue its battle for accountability after a judge sided with its arguments. WildEarth Guardians said the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District has been issued water permits and extensions for 90 years, without having to adequately prove what s called "beneficial use." The judge ruled the New Mexico State Engineer violated state law when a challenge brought by WildEarth Guardians was dismissed. Samantha Ruscavage-Barz, legal director for WildEarth Guardians, said the district is the single largest water user in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, and argued rubber-stamping of extensions needs to end. . ....

Initiative Helps Hoosiers Get Environmental Resilience Funding

A funding hub has launched in Indiana, designed to help small communities pursue federal funding for climate, energy and resilience projects. The mission of the Indiana Resilience Funding Hub is to assist communities with fewer than 50,000 residents access federal dollars for their projects. Bill Brown, assistant director of strategy and engagement for the Environmental Resilience Institute at Indiana University, feels many communities are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the opportunities available through the Inflation Reduction Act, which invests $369 billion in energy security and climate change mitigation over the next 10 years. . ....

Irrigation board candidate contests election loss

That’s because one candidate is contesting his loss with allegations of incomplete ballots and other “deficiencies.”
In the June 8 Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District board election, Simon T. “Scooter” Haynes ran against incumbent Joaquin Baca for a Bernalillo County position.

Baca received 1,583 votes to Haynes’ 571 votes, according to unofficial results posted to the MRGCD website on election night.
But Haynes said his nickname, Scooter, was not on most early voting ballots.
He first notified Ernie Marquez, election director at Automated Election Services in Rio Rancho, who corrected the ballots before Election Day.
Haynes presented his accusations to the board at a June 11 special meeting that was held to declare official results. ....
